Comet Over Broadway Original screenplay for the 1938 film screenwriter Mark Hellinger's bound copy with a typescript draft and a TLS from Bette Davis

1938133673Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1938. Final Draft script for the 1938 film. From the library of producer Mark Hellinger who wrote the film's screenplay bound in red three-quarter leather with gilt titles and designs marbled endpapers raised bands trimmed edges and Hellinger's name in gilt on the front board. Also included is a typescript on onionskin stock with the title and credits for Hellinger and story writer Faith Baldwin on the front wrapper in holograph ink. Finally laid in is a typed letter signed by Bette Davis dated March 31 1939 on Davis' stationery thanking Hellinger for kind words regarding her film "Dark Victory" 1939 and discussing her dismay with the script for "Comet Over Broadway" and her resulting decision to part ways with the film. Mark Hellinger's first screenplay for Warner Brothers. His other credits include the noir antecedent "The Roaring Twenties" 1939 screenwriter "It All Came True" 1940 producer and his notable series of foundation noir films "High Sierra" 1941 associate producer "The Killers" 1946 producer and "The Naked City" 1948 producer. Based on a story by Faith Baldwin published in "Cosmopolitan" in 1937 about Eve Appleton Francis wife of garage owner Bill Appleton Litel and aspiring actress. Bill gets into an argument with an actor over Eve and accidentally kills him. Eve takes her infant daughter and tries to make her way on Broadway while Bill is imprisoned. Set in New York. Bound script: Noted as FINAL on the distribution page dated 3/28/38 with credits for Hellinger Robert Buckner N. Brewster Morse Fritz Falkenstein and Frank Cavett on the following page flatsigned by Walter MacEwen. Distribution page present with receipt intact. 155 leaves mimeograph duplication dated August 19 1938 and August 22 1938 screenwriters' credit page. Pages and binding Near Fine. Typescript: Blue wrappers. "Comet Over Broadway by Mark Hellinger / after a story by Faith Baldwin" in holograph ink on the front wrapper. Ostensibly the record of a Women In American Music course taught by Karlene Faith at the University of California in Spring of 1975 but more importantly the basis of academic study into the power and importance of women musicians and songwriters a previously totally ignored field of study and research. Undeniably an important historical document in light of the fact as Faith relates in the introduction of the book that this course was unique at the time of its teaching and only came to be after a new Women's Studies program was adopted at UCSC a previous incarnation having been rejected a year before when pitched to a male administrator with the comment that it was "too narrow". When preparing the course Faith discovered how little contemporary research existed regarding women in music. Aside from the insightful essays and lectures the volume Includes a resource list descriptions of the class lectures and projects student statements testimonials of guest speakers and photographs of all the women who participated in the making of the book. A scarce document with an undeniably far reaching effect upon the understanding of the influence of women on popular music. Frances Fuchs' essay in particular "And We Sing of Love" speaks eloquently of the contradictions inherent in being a feminist listening to Nina Simone appreciated her fluency and genius but finding it complicated to sing along to "When you like a fella treat him right give him your attention day and night. Even when he's wrong tell him that he's right you can take the blame both day and night." She speaks of Joni Mitchell's "Constant search for the perfect illusional love consequent defeat and self destruction." and how the music and lyrics of Toni Brown provided a shift for her away from that but noting that "many of her lyrics convey the dissatisfaction with being a woman in today's world." Additional pieces of writing similarly discuss the importance of African American singers in providing alternative musical narratives through Blues R&B and Soul. The first step of an important journey away from 'women who make music' and towards 'women-identified music' music for by and about women with all the distinctions that embodies. Basis for the 1936 movie of the same name starring Henry Fonda Margaret Sullavan and Beulah Bondi. Signed presentation from Baldwin to mystery writer Mignon Eberhart and her husband: "Mignon and Alan with much love from their Faith." The friendship between Baldwin and Eberhart is well documented with Eberhart sometimes called mystery's Faith Baldwin. Eberhart dedicated her 1935 novel The House On The Roof to Baldwin and her companion Gonnie. Eberhart is considered the founder of the modern romantic suspense novel and introduced female heroines preceding Agatha Christie's Jane Marple. They included two Inscribed association copies one Signed copy of an unpublished poetry collection and a rare promotional flyer. All are first editions. Three are hardcovers with original or contemporary dustwrapers and two are paperback originals. Overall very good with moderate wear and some with dampstaining or soiling. Vilas 1878-1955 was a poet and playwright who graduated from Lewis Institute in Chicago and authored five collections of poetry and 14 plays. She read and lectures across the county and on radio in the Washington DC where she lived with her husband who was a prominent Milwaukee lawyer served on the Federal Trade Commission. The works here appear to have come from the Palmer family of Bethesda Maryland with three books inscribed or signed to them and two of them with notes from Vila in the text adding background or explaining the inspiration behind various poems.
