James Quinter (1816-1888) joined the German Baptist Brethren Church in 1833, was elected to the ministry in 1838, and ordained an elder in 1856. He was educated at the boarding school, West Bradford, PA and taught school in Montgomery County, PA (1833-1842); and in Fayette County, PA (1842-1856). He served as principal of New Vienna (Ohio) Academy (1861-1864); Huntingdon Normal School; Brethren's Normal College; and Juniata College (1879-1888). He was one of the first Brethren to hold protracted evangelistic meetings. In 1856 he moved to Poland, Ohio to become Assistant Editor of the Gospel Visitor. He soon became co-editor and in 1866 purchased a half share in the publication. In 1873 he became sole owner of the Gospel Visitor and purchased the Christian Family Companion and Gospel Visitor. In 1876 it was renamed the Primitive Christian. In 1877 it was merged with the Pilgrim and Quinter moved to Huntingdon, where he continued as editor and became a senior member of the publishing firm, Quinter and Brumbaugh Brothers. Scarce. L20
