New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 522 p. Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923). This book is about the social history of superstitious beliefs and especially magic and sorcery. I mainly tried to examine how superstitious beliefs and magic transformed the daily life of the Ottoman Empire into a world of superstitions in the nineteenth century. However, I had to go further back when I deepened my research into the origin of superstitious beliefs and magic seen in almost every period of the Ottoman Empire. I looked at polytheistic religions like shamanism, Animism, Manichaenism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the common religious beliefs of the former Turkish world. I included various other pagan religions and cultures underlying the past of the Ottoman geography over three continents as well as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, the Sky God belief in Central Asia and finally Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, ¿professional¿ magicians were of the ulema class who were not reluctant to utilize religious knowledge for their personal interests. In fact, they began to live immorally; ¿amateur¿ magicians were composed of occult groups, a.k.a. pseudo-clergy. I followed magic and magicians included in the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives only as they were caught as a result of a complaint. Füsun and Efsun, daughters of Cinci Arif Hoca, and their story add local and authentic flavor to the points made in the book.

In-folio, 30 chalcographic plates, title page and leaves from 1 to 12 damaged in the lower left margin, without prejudice of the engraving, binding in simple paper. Regarding the collections of translations of the frescoes by Circignani (Pomarancio), it should be noted that the churches belonged to the Germanic-Hungarian and English colleges: the atrocious martyrologists frescoed by Pomarancio had therefore to prepare the future soldiers of Christ for the harshest trials in the lands of heresy; the engravings of C. were therefore not only delegated tasks of reproduction, but also of building and spreading exemplary models in the context of the figurative culture of the Counter-Reformation. The collections of prints then acquired great documentary importance since the cycle of S. Apollinare was destroyed, and that the inscriptions disappeared from the cycle of S. Stefano Rotondo, whose texts are preserved in the tables with the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi.

8vo. Vi, 144 pages. In German. In Series: Religionsgeschichtliches Lesebuch. 2. Ereweiterte Aufl. ; ; 17; Swiss Bible scholar and theologian, who taught biblical exegesis at the University of Basle. Bertholet wrote extensively on the canonical and extra-canonical books of the Bible. His Appendix on the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha in the Geschichte der althebraeischen Literatur (ed. , K. Budde, 1906, 1909) is considered one of the best in the field. In his works Der Beitrag des Alten Testaments zur allgemeinen Religionsgeschichte (1923) and Das Dynamistische im Alten Testament (1926) Bertholet maintained that the religion of ancient Israel, characterized by a strong personal conception of the Deity, was unique in a world dominated by dynamistic theories which viewed the universe as essentially constituted by natural and supernatural forces.
