br. Lingua di cultura e d'uso attestata nel millennio che va dal sec. III al sec. XII d.C., il copto fu idioma dell'elemento autoctono di fede cristiana dell'Egitto accanto al greco e, a partire dal sec. VII, all'arabo. Ultima fase della lingua egiziana, il copto era scritto tramite l'alfabeto greco arricchito di alcuni segni supplementari derivati dalla scrittura demotica. La prima parte di questo volume - esaustiva introduzione allo studio della lingua copta, illustrata nelle sue principali varianti dialettali - affronta il contesto storico, sociale e culturale in cui il copto fiorì e assurse a medium di una civiltà scrittoria cui dobbiamo, tra l'altro, la conservazione di opere letterarie greche, altrimenti perdute, e testi documentarî essenziali per lo studio dell'economia, del diritto e della storia sociale dell'Egitto tardoantico e medievale. La seconda parte descrive in dettaglio l'alfabeto, la fonologia, la morfologia con lineamenti di sintassi delle principali varietà dialettali della lingua.
