Jiddu Krishnamurti broke with Theosophy in 1929. Specifically he dissolved the Order of the Star an organization created by the Theosophical Society to promote him as the World Teacher Maitreya-Messiah during their annual camp in Ommen in August of 1929. At that meeting publicly rejected his role as the World Teacher and left the Theosophical Society. This famous break-up is written about by Krishnamurti in the September issue of The Star. Publisher's printed wrappers various colors Very good.This was mainly a vehicle for the publication of Krishnamurti and the Theosophist writings. Other authors include Manly P. Hall R. F Goudey J. Anker Lason and F. J. de St. V. Schwankovsky.In April 1909 Krishnamurti first met Charles Webster Leadbeater who claimed clairvoyance. Leadbeater had noticed Krishnamurti on the Society's beach on the Adyar river and was amazed by the "most wonderful aura he had ever seen without a particle of selfishness in it". Leadbeater was convinced that the boy would become a spiritual teacher and a great orator; the likely "vehicle for the Lord Maitreya" in Theosophical doctrine an advanced spiritual entity periodically appearing on Earth as a World Teacher to guide the evolution of humankind. Following his discovery by Leadbeater Krishnamurti was nurtured by the Theosophical Society in Adyar. Leadbeater and a small number of trusted associates undertook the task of educating protecting and generally preparing Krishnamurti as the "vehicle" of the expected World Teacher. Krishnamurti was privately tutored at the Theosophical compound in Madras and later exposed to a comparatively opulent life among a segment of European high society as par of his continuing education abroad. Despite his history of problems with schoolwork and concerns about his capacities and physical condition the 14-year-old Krishnamurti was able to speak and write competently in English within six months. In 1911 the Theosophical Society established the Order of the Star in the East OSE to prepare the world for the expected appearance of the World Teacher. Krishnamurti was named as its head with senior Theosophists assigned various other positions. Membership was open to anybody who accepted the doctrine of the Coming of the World Teacher. But as Krishnamurti evolved he soon cam to see various faults with both Theosophy as with his position as Lord Maitrya and the attendenat Order of the Star of the East. His new direction reached a climax in 1929 when he rebuffed attempts by Leadbeater and Besant to continue with the Order of the Star. Krishnamurti dissolved the Order during the annual Star Camp at Ommen the Netherlands on August 3 1929. Not only did he dissolve the OSE he dismissed the entire idea of the teacher-disciple stating that the search for truth is a solitary pursuit in which only total honesty is required. The Order of the Star in the East had various publications. This one The Star was the American version. Included in this lot in the August 1929 issue the same month he broke with the Theosophists. In this issue there are only hints of the coming schism; "The idea of renunciation is associated with pain; but there is no pain in renouncing that which you have outgrown" p. 6. In the September issue there is a plain statement of fact- "Dissolution of the Order of the Star by D. Rajagopal." While removing himself from the Theosophist Camp Krishnamurti still remained friends with many of its adherents in fact he was the secret lover of the wife of D. Rajagopal for many decades.
