1499RLEA00sndUring Gering and Bertold Rembolt 1499. Very Good. Gering Ulrich. Leaf from Epistolae by Paulus Apostolus; commentaries of Beda Venerabilis Augustinus Johannes Chrysostomus. Rumbolt Bertold; Saint Augustine. Sorbonne Paris: Uring Gering and Bertold Rembolt 1499. 54-55pp. Illustrated. 23 x 32 cm. Book condition: Very good with one small damp stain on bottom edge and one stain along top edge. Five miniscule holes where the leaf was once bound. Ulrich Gering was one of the three men to estabish the first printing press in Paris. He and Berolt Rembolt printed this work at Soleil d'Or rue Sorbonne where they printed more than forty incunabulae together there. This leaf is the first page of Chapter XI. Next to the chapter label ""Foliu.liiij"" determines the leaf number 54 and the verso 56. In the Middle Ages ""j"" was often used as a ""swash"" variant to replace the letter ""i"". Written in two columns with printed marginalia printer's signatures and a manicule at line 22 in the third paragraph of the second column of page 54. This leaf features two intricately decorated capital letter ""N""s likely in Rembolt's hand. A capital from this work is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an example of finely decorated Roman alphabet. There is evidence that the typographic decoration was done by Remnolt. He married Charlotte Guillard in 1502. She took over the Soleil d'Or when he died and Rembolt's style is evident in her decoration of capitals. Before meeting Rembolt she was one of just fifty four women working in the Paris book trade. Now she is the first known woman book printer who owned and operated The Soleil d'Or until her death. Uring Gering and Bertold Rembolt unknown
