Deville's paper: pp. 857-861.

First printing of Deville's first paper on "Dissociation" establishing a new type of high temperature chemistry."The effect of heat on chemical reactions was of particular interest. From the time of Bergman it had been realized that reactions often followed a course at high temperatures which differed from that followed at lower ones. In 1857 Henri Deville began a eries of studies which established quantitatively a new type of high- temperature reaction. In the course of his studies on the preparation of sodium and potassium and their use as reducing agents in the manufacture of other metals Deville often used high temperatures. He was aware of the decompositions which often occurred under these conditions and he suspected that such decompositions were of very frequent occurrence. He therfore undertook the study of reactions which occurred reversibly at high temperature. Such reactions he called 'dissociations' and by an extensive series of studies he showed the importence of dissociation as a general phenomenon in chemistry." Leicester a. He used the sodium obtained by his method for the preparation of such elements as silicon boron and titanium. His investigations of the metallurgy of platinum led to honors from the Russian government" DSB.In Sparrow's "Milestones of Science" is listed Deville's larger work from 1859 "De l'aluminium. 1841EBS100246Paris: Imprimerie de Bachelier Rue du Jardinet no. 12 1841. Soft cover. Very Good/Very Good. First Ed 8vo.Deville s doctoral thesis. Orig. green printed wrappers: 2 leaves pp 3 4-48; slight Tear bottom of spine Sondheimer #431; see Partington IV pp 497-9; numerous important discoveries including first practical process to produce aluminum. Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville 18181881 a French chemist is best known for his later contributions to metallurgy and inorganic chemistry particularly in the industrial production of aluminum and platinum refining. However his 1841 thesisÉtudes sur l'Essence de Térébenthinerepresents an early systematic investigation into turpentines chemical properties preceding his groundbreaking metallurgical work. This doctoral dissertation presented to the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Paris focuses on the chemical composition physical properties and reactions of turpentine oil a volatile substance derived from conifer resins widely used in paint medicine and industrial applications. Deville analyzed the molecular structure of turpentine oil which is primarily composed of terpenes such as pinene. His work clarified the role of hydrocarbons in the composition of essential oils. The study includes experimental distillation methods to separate and purify turpentine components. This thesis places Deville among the early researchers in terpene chemistry influencing later studies on essential oils resins and natural hydrocarbons.
