Adolf Herckenrath est entré dans l' histoire en tant qu'ami d'enfance pour lequel Karel van de Woestijne a écrit son Laethemsche Brieven sur Lente 1901… À partir de novembre 1909 Herckenrath résida dans la Veldstraat où il conserva la librairie Adolf Hoste et une fois l'université devenue bilingue principalement consacré à la littérature francophone. Entre les deux guerres mondiales Herckenrath était toujours actif en tant que professeur et membre du conseil d'administration de l'académie de théâtre de Gand pour laquelle un magazine De Tooneelschool 1937-1940 avait également été fondé. Il aida à fonder Pan le cercle de la littérature flamande orientale en 1938… En 1935 Herckenrath s'installa dans la villa 't Kersouwken sur l'Eikeldreef à Sint-Martens-Latem. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale il y résidera officiellement pendant quelques mois de mai à novembre 1944. Il est ensuite retourné dans sa librairie de la Veldstraat où il vivrait au moins officiellement jusqu'à sa mort. Après la guerre sa librairie a été reconstruite par le célèbre architecte Geo Henderick. Grâce à la continuation de son fils Walter et de ses petits-enfants Guy et Helga le nom Herckenrath a également survécu jusqu'à la fermeture de l'entreprise à la mi-2000. In 8s but small pocket size 5.5" x 3.5" Later binding in what looks like full vellum cartonnage with brown and gilt spine label renewed endpapers. Title within ornamental border handsome crible initials lovely stamps of the Discalced Carmelites library. In Latin. The text of St. Paul's epistles surrounded by Gagny's commentary with De Colines' wonderful typeface. De Gagny d1546 was a French theologian who was chancellor of the University of Paris and did significant New Testament work. Covers have some normal wear. Interior has a handsome red bookplate of Charles E. Doble 1847-1914 an editor at Oxford with a stamp from the Discalced on the title page and a wonderful stamp from the Discalced library on the dedication page another interesting crest laid down on the back of the title page. Text has some normal foxing and yellowing a slight humidity stain at the gutter at the top throughout a slight bit of worming in the gutter at the beginning just affecting a few letters but otherwise clean and unmarked. The printer is Simon de Colines c. 1480 1546 one of the first printers of the French Renaissance. He was active in Paris as a printer and worked exclusively for the University of Paris from 1520 to 1546. In addition to his work as a printer; Colines worked as an editor publisher and punchcutter. Colines used elegant roman and italic types and a Greek type with accents that were superior to their predecessors. These are now called French old-style a style that remained popular for over 200 years. Quite scarce and an attractive copy of this commentary on the letters of the Apostle Paul's letters with a nice provenance. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 344 pages . Simon De Colines & Galliot De Pre hardcover
