NL-07001
Rare map of Yemen compiled by indigenous cartographer.

This striking and historically significant map entitled The Yemen was compiled by the elusive Yemeni cartographer H. Althamary - an anglicisation of Husayn ʿAbd Allah Dhamari - who is one of a handful of non-western indigeous cartographers active during the first decades of Arab independence.

The map is rendered in warm ochres and yellows muted orange and bright blue conveying the country's varied elevation through a colour-coded relief scheme. The Red Sea coast forms the western boundary the Gulf of Aden defines the southern edge and the region of Asir marks the northern limit. The eastern frontier fades into the vastness of the Rubʻ al-Khali deliberately leaving the territory of the then-independent People's Democratic Republic of Yemen undefined. Strategically significant governorates including Taiz al-Baydaʾ and Maʾrib are clearly indicated.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The omission of South Yemen from the map reflects the tense political climate of the period. A brief border conflict erupted between the two Yemeni states in October 1972 resolved by the Cairo Agreement which proposed eventual unification. North Yemen was aligned with Saudi Arabia and the south with the Soviet Union. The two nations ultimately merged in 1990 forming the modern Republic of Yemen.

RARITY

The first edition of this map was published in Egypt in 1972 following the border conflict mentioned above. Both an Arabic edition and another English edition followed in 1976. Ours is a fine example of the second English edition. Althamary is alsoalso recognised for an equally rare companion map of Sanʿaʾ.

Institutional examples are recorded at only seven libraries worldwide OCLC no. 5485806 making this an exceptional rarity on the open market. Institutional holdings include the Library of Congress Cornell University the University of Exeter Leiden University and the National Library of Scotland.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Colour lithograph printed on thin paper. Some natural cockling but otherwise in excellent condition.
