Tears to upper margin of front endpapers and edges lightly soiled. Bound in contemporary 3/4 black leather and black cloth which is worn at edges. A scarce early American edition of its kind. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries several decades before the widespread adoption of Braille printers and educators in France and Britain began developing a variety of tactile reading systems for the visually impaired making independent reading among the blind possible for the first time in history. The results of an important competition at the Royal Society of Arts in Edinburgh in 1832 inspired the American activist Samuel Gridley Howe to research and develop his own embossed reading system for the blind which emerged in 1835 as "Boston Line Type." Drawing upon the methods of James Gall an entrant in the Edinburgh competition Howe created an alphabet of angular raised roman letters that "was said to be far less bulky and therefore less expensive than contemporary European roman-letter systems" PRINTING HISTORY p. 20. With the aid of a $1000 grant from the American Bible Society Howe purchased the first printing press for the New England Institution for the Education of the Blind today the Perkins School for the Blind and produced the country's first complete raised-letter Bible for the American Bible Society in 1842. The present Book of Psalms appears to have been printed with the first complete Howe-ABS Bible retaining the pagination of that production and was published separately with a new title page. ABS had published Selections of Psalms in 1835 and the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind a Psalms and Hymns in 1840 and 1848 this is a very early edition of the Psalms. Quarter calf and marbled paper over boards paper covered corners smooth back divided into six panels by gilt roll. Foot of spine slightly chipped new paper sides. Internally there is a small stain to gutter at head of several pages but it is fairly unobtrusive. A few pages have a cross in ink to head. The first mentioned is uncommon with four locations on COPAC but none with this imprint and none of the same date the second is well held institutionally but again none with this imprint or date. The Magdalen Hospital was established in 1758 later renamed Magdalen Hospital for the Reception of Penitent Prostitutes it provided a refuge and a place where prostitutes could be treated and cared for. The women wore a uniform of light grey dresses and in their whole dress plain and neat. They were instructed in reading and the principles of Christian religion. They were employed in needlework or house-keeping according to their abilities. They made household linens of all kinds shirts shifts knitting mending and learned domestic work to qualify them for service From banksidethenandnow. The Asylum was also established in 1758 mainly due to the efforts of John Fielding brother of Henry. These Psalm / Hymn books were presumably published in order to raise funds. Reprint. Joseph Milligan was Thomas Jefferson's longtime Georgetown bookseller. When Congress agreed to purchase Jefferson’s library Milligan went to Jefferson’s Monticello home to inventory and appraise the collection. He also supervised its packing and transportation to Washington. When the transfer of Jefferson's book collection to Washington D.C. was completed in July 1815 Jefferson was already working with Milligan to rebuild a new library his ‘retirement library.' . The Psalms were translated and paraphrased under the supervision of the Franconia Mennonite Conference for the use of eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites. Music is present in the first portion though the bulk of the volume is of words. => It's an engaging fact that psalms are given in multiple versions; there are four of the 23d.<br>Â Â Â Â Arndt and Eck cite Bender who says "This first American Mennonite Hymnbook is => not to be confused with one of similar title printed by Saur at Germantown in 1753 called erroneously by Seidensticker and Flory a Mennonite hymnbook." Each portion of this item has a separate title-page with the second section's title-page reading Sammlung altre und neuer Geistreichen Gesänge. The woodcut frontispiece depicts David playing his harp. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Arndt & Eck 2419; Shoemaker 2239. Contemporary calf rebacked some time ago spine with gilt-stamped leather title and publication labels; rubbed with leather open across joints but volume still quite firm; original clasps now lacking. Front fly-leaves with early inked and pencilled inscriptions. Final leaf pp. 21/22 of the 22-page appendix of brief hymn texts not of the main portion of the work lacking. Edge nicks chips and tears some extending into text; three leaves torn in half from outer margin without loss of text; two leaves one index with lower outer corner torn away with loss of a few words; last two leaves with outer edges ragged. A truly => unique copy this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge D.D. 18631916 a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts annotated of course.<br>Â Â Â Â Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" 1911 including the Hebrew psalms.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moiré silk spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above pressure-stamp on title-page call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle dust- or sometimes soot-soiled at edges and prone to chipping. Hendrik Walter van Haasel 17721846 was een Amsterdamse goudsmid zoon van goudsmid Albertus van Haasel en Johanna Maria ten Dam. Hij werd rond 1798 in het Amsterdamse goudsmidsgilde opgenomen en gebruikte vanaf 1807 het meesterteken VH. Four works bound in one volume 178 folio 408 244 80 pp. Original gold-stamped Leather binding H. 155 x W. 87 x D. 55 cm. length of the clasp 115 cm. The Church book contains the following inscription: Died on November 26 1869 Jan van Loon aged 73 born in 1796. The clasp is marked with the provincial lion and the maker's mark. The clasp arm consists of a cast and finely art work of flowers birds and grapes. Hendrik Walter van Haasel 17721846 was an Amsterdam goldsmith active from the late 18th to the early 19th century working from the family workshop on the Haarlemmerdijk. Recorded with makers marks VH sometimes accompanied by a hare or arrow after the guild period and later also using the retailers mark VAN HAASEL. Private collection The Netherlands 2010. Het geheel is vastgezet met bloemvormige gouden spijkertjes. De sloten zijn vervaardigd door de Rotterdamse edelsmid Adrianus van Bemme 1772-1811. De letters MST zijn aan de binnenzijde van de aanzetstukken gestempeld samen met de jaarletter 'b' 1809 en het keurmerk van de stad Rotterdam. 492 10 n.p. Attractive binding bound in red morocco with floral decoration gilded at the edges and with two 18-carat golden clasps. The clasps are formed of biblical jars in square frames decorated with garlands of leaves and with fine gold-stamped straps also with pictures of biblical jars in square frames decorated with garlands of leaves. The whole is fastened with flower-shaped gold nails. The maker is a goldsmith from Rotterdam named Adrianus van Bemme 1772-1811. The fittings are marked with the letters MST stamped on the inside of the hasps together with the letter 'b' for the year 1809. Golden claps on a church book were already seen as rather exceptional in the past and because of the expensiveness that has not changed until now.Literature: Noordwijk B. van n.d.
