155539566Basileae: per Ioannem Oporinum colophon: 1555. 8vo 15.9 cm 6.25". 16 341 7 pp. Sole edition of these Greek paraphrased psalms done by Paul Dolscius while he was serving as a rector in Halle. Melanchthon was a great supporter of Dolscius 152689 whose translation work was so proficient that at one point his authorial byline on the Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession was assumed to be merely a pseudonym for the great reformer himself. Â Â Â Â The text here is simply printed with the Latin preface in roman and the main text in Greek using single columns; a 5-line decorative initial and a 7-line inhabited one showing two kings in profile complete the work. This is now an uncommon edition with searches of Worldcat COPAC USTC and NUC Pre-1956 revealing only three U.S. institutions reporting ownership. Â Â Â Â Provenance: An inked ownership stamp of notable 19th-century English bibliomaniac Richard Heber 17741833 reading "Bibliotheca Heberiana" appears on the front free endpaper; Thomas Frognall Dibdin added this stamp to select rare books in Heber's collection following the collector's death. Light age-toning with occasional slivers of marginal staining possibly thanks to the blue edge stain one interior tear touching letters and two marginal spots. Spine defective and covers rubbed but binding is sound; several leaves bear stubs at outer edge from former index tabs; first leaf of Psalter extended at inner margin; final two leaves slightly waterstained; some browning and occasional stains; text block seriously trimmed but never into text. Notes on front endpapers and a presentation inscription in 1826 from a member of the German Methodist Episcopal Church U.S. In a custom half-morocco slipcase and chemise. 293 of 296 leaves; lacking first 2 leaves of the Calendar and final blank. â€¢6 â€¢â€¢8 a-x8 y12 z8 A-L8 M3. 1 vols. 8vo; 111 x 90 mm. An Incunable of the Utmost Rarity. Johann Zainer the Elder fl. 1472-93 established the first printing press at Ulm where his first book is dated 1473. This pocket psalter by Zainer is undated; the colophon gives only the printer's name and the city in which it was printed. ISTC gives a conjectural date of around 1480. The book's handy but fragile format a thick octavo that would have been easily portable for late fifteenth-century users doubtless guaranteed a low survival rate. Indeed the few copies which have survived are often incomplete fragments or in poor condition. 1804528Lancaster: Gedruckt bey Johann Albrecht 1804. Together two volumes in one. Small 8vo. 180 x 110 mm. 7 x 4 ¼ inches. 6 79 1 pp.; 415 17 pp. Text printed in two columns. Numerous lines of printed music throughout both volumes. Bound in contemporary calf two metal clamps; binding bumped at edges some rubbing to joints showing some wear; leather straps showing wear but still strong; the paper stock is brown from age and there are water stains in the lower margin of the first volume; otherwise a very copy. First edition of this important Lancaster printed song book. The title reads in translation "A non-denominational hymnal: containing spirited songs and Psalms commonly used during services of true faith." The book is arranged in two parts psalms and songs each with their own title-page and register. It was reprinted in 1808 and 1820 and numerous other editions appeared before 1840. The text and music were collected from a number of songbooks and published together at the request of the Brotherhood of the Mennonite Brethren. This copy with an inscription on the front free endpaper in German which reads "This book belongs to Maria Neuschwangern which I received from my father when I was 11 years old on the 22nd of February 1805. I Maria Neuschwangern was born on the 22nd of February in the year 1794." Shaw & Shoemaker American Bibliography 6767. Third printing following the first of 1803 of the first Mennonite hymnal printed in the United States. The Psalms were translated and paraphrased under the supervision of the Franconia Mennonite Conference for the use of eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites. Music is present in the first portion though the bulk of the volume is of words. => It's an engaging fact that psalms are given in multiple versions; there are four of the 23d. Â Â Â Â Arndt and Eck cite Bender who says "This first American Mennonite Hymnbook is => not to be confused with one of similar title printed by Saur at Germantown in 1753 called erroneously by Seidensticker and Flory a Mennonite hymnbook." Each portion of this item has a separate title-page with the second section's title-page reading Sammlung altre und neuer Geistreichen Gesänge. The woodcut frontispiece depicts David playing his harp. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Arndt & Eck 2419; Shoemaker 2239. Contemporary calf rebacked some time ago spine with gilt-stamped leather title and publication labels; rubbed with leather open across joints but volume still quite firm; original clasps now lacking. Front fly-leaves with early inked and pencilled inscriptions. Final leaf pp. 21/22 of the 22-page appendix of brief hymn texts not of the main portion of the work lacking. Edge nicks chips and tears some extending into text; three leaves torn in half from outer margin without loss of text; two leaves one index with lower outer corner torn away with loss of a few words; last two leaves with outer edges ragged. Ownership signature of Nathaniel Clark 1731/2; later provenance notes loosely inserted. Ink on paper 38 of 41 leaves paginated irregularly 1-60 with an index. Lacking three leaves near the beginning with six tunes as per the index. 1 vols. Small oblong 8vo. Fascinating early colonial American manuscript book of tunes with family provenance suggesting connections to Watertown and Woburn Mass. The manuscript is a compilation of psalm and hymn tunes with some material deriving from the two American tune books published in the 1720s. There are 24 compositions from Walter The Grounds and Rules of Music and 37 compositions from Tufts An Introduction to the Art of Singing Psalm Tunes. Two are American compositions and are marked "new" in the manuscript: Psalm 100 and Southwell which figures in both Walter and Tufts. There are 60 compositions all but one of which are sacred. The one secular song is "The Sylvan Oracle" from Congreve's Judgment of Paris a Masque 1701 the first verses of which are inscribed here: Let ambition fire thy mind Thou wert born o'er men to reign Not to follow flocks design'd; Scorn thy crook and leave the plain. Crowns I'll throw beneath thy feet Thou on necks of kings shall tread Joys in circles joys shall meet Which way e'er thy fancies lead. The ownership signature "Nathaniel Clark His Book An. Dom. 1731/2" points to Nathaniel Clark 1698-1776 whose son Peter Clark was born in Woburn in 1738. Later family notes on provenance accompany the manuscript. Cf.
