With 29 contemporary hand-coloured folding engraved plates. 2 parts in 1 volume each part divided in 3 sections. "169" = 159 4 1 blank; "167" = 159 4 1 blank pp. Rare edition of a work on Dutch marine life with 29 beautifully hand-coloured plates. The work describes the fish molluscs crustaceans corals and seaweeds that can be found in the Dutch North Sea in particular in the province of Zeeland. The plates were drawn from life and the explanations of the plates often mention where the depicted specimen was found. The present edition is quite rare as we have only been able to find one other copy in sales records and nine in libraries.The present edition is a reissue of Natuurkundige uitspanningen behelzende eenige waarneemingen over sommige zee-planten en zee-insecten which was published in six instalments from 1762-1765. A Latin edition titled Opuscula subseciva was published simultaneously. All three editions contain the same plates but the dedications and the divisional title pages of the different instalments where omitted in the present edition which is why there are gaps in the pagination. It is however complete. This edition is the most scarce of the three.Job Baster 1711-1775 was a Dutch physician botanist and naturalist born in Zierikzee. He corresponded with Linnaeus and became a fellow of the Royal Society in London. He was the first to import goldfishes from China and acclimatised them successfully to his garden pond. He was interested in a wide variety of subjects and also wrote works on the earth's atmosphere the weather and birds but the present work is his most well-known. It was intended to be longer but Baster was forced to stop when he suddenly became blind in one eye in 1764. The magazine of the Dutch malacological society is named after him because of his contributions to the field of zoology.The spine is browned the marbled paper on the front board is discoloured. The work is uncut and somewhat browned throughout the top outer corner and the lower half of the fore edge margin of the title page have been reinforced a water stain in the lower outer corner of the final leaf and the four plates at the end. On drink Roberts writes "I would wish to introduce the drinking of beer in this country for the common drink; knowing by experience that it is the most wholesome beverage made use of therefore recommend it to private families to brew their own beer." There are also a few pages on cider and some discussion of grasses. Veterinary interests extend to a cure for Botts a worm particularly damaging to horses. There is also information and useful recipes regarding gypsum plaster salt and 'stuffing boots'. ~ Contemporary tree calf a little eroded at spine ends red morocco spine label titles in gilt; spine gilt-ruled. Age-toned and lightly foxed throughout but still a very good copy. Attractive copy of Job Wilson's study of the influence of climate on the epidemic of spotted fever meningitis that spread throughout New England in the first years of the 19th century. Organized in three parts Wilson begins with a short description of the climate in New England from 1630 until 1806. Wilson expands the details of his study to show climate variations from 1801 to 1814 and their correlation with the rise and fall of the disease. This is one of the earliest studies in America to offer data on climate and disease with specific reference to the outbreak of spotted fever in 1807 1809 1811-1815. Part two of the Wilson's study describes the cause for the fever with reference to its impact on the lungs liver and brain. Part three discusses the ways of preventing the disease and its spread from person to person. The unsigned engravings illustrate the impact of the spotted fever on the nervous system lungs and heart. In an earlier work The Influence of Scientific Discovery and Invention on Social and Political Progress 1843 Durfee believed that he had found in the advent of steam power a sign of divine intervention indicating a "law of progress" in man's development. Panidea adumbrates this theme: all is eventually assimilated into the "Theanthropoid" Durfee's term for the Divine Mind. See Schneider History of American Philosophy. Written to President John Quincy Adams trying to convince him that he is a supporter in part: ".Mr. Pearce who is my competition for the seat which of lately occupied in Congress. Sir I am informed stated publicly and repeated that in conversation with you whilst last at Newport on your way to Washington you said to him that a short time since - that the whole delegation of the state of Rhode Island of course including myself were opposed to you. I have no confidence in the correctness of this report but their sic may be some who will believe it. The people of this state knowing that I have amongst them uniformly avowed my friendship for you as far as the report is credited be inclined to believe I have asserted one opinion at home and another at Washington. It is therefore injurious to my private character and I would feel myself under great obligation to you could you think there be no impropriety in enabling you to correct it." Several small spots and holes; very good- condition.<br/> <br/> Job Durfee was a politician and jurist from Rhode Island. Born at Tiverton he graduated from Brown University in 1813 and was admitted to the bar. He was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1816 to 1820 and was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Seventeenth Congress and was reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress serving from March 4 1821 to March 3 1825. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1824 to the Nineteenth Congress and for election in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress; he was again a member of the State house of representatives from 1826 to 1829 serving as speaker from 1827 to 1829. He declined to be a candidate for reelection and resumed the practice of law; in May 1833 he was elected associate justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He was chief justice from June 1835 until his death in Tiverton in 1847.<br/> <br/> unknown

Rebound in brown cloth. Leather spine label. Hardbound. Very Good. 'Squire' Job Roberts 1757-1851 was a remarkable man of Welsh Quaker decent. He was born lived and died in Whitpain close to Gwynedd and for many years he was one of the most conspicuous figures in the farming business and social circles of Gwynedd. He did much to improve the methods of farming planted hedges introduced the feeding of green fodder to cattle instead of grazing built a barn which was enormously large according to the usual standard and very early introduced the use of gypsum on fields. He was one of the first in Pennsylvania to introduce and breed Merino sheep and during the movement to establish the manufacture of silk he was one of its most zealous promoters. In 1791 Gov. Mifflin appointed him a justice of the peace and he continued as such until 1820 when he resigned and returned to farming and other entreprenureal pursuits. S&S/AI 7203; Sabin 71898; Rink 1148.
