Since the 1640s Ludolf had been working in Gotha in the diplomatic service of Duke Ernst I of Sachsen-Gotha who encouraged his Ethiopic studies and since 1675 in the service of his son and successor Friedrich I. He is best known for his monumental history of Ethiopia Historia Aethiopica Frankfurt 1681 with supplemental works to 1694. The present little book is his first publication seriously devoted to the history of Ethiopia and marks the beginning of the work that was to lead to his magnum opus.With bookplate owner's inscription and library stamp. With a woodcut vignette on the title page 2 decorated woodcut initials and several headpieces made up of typographical ornaments. 16 281 11 pp. Very rare first French edition of a historical account of the second siege of Bergen op Zoom 1622 during the Eighty Years' War beautifully bound by the Swiss bookbinder Hans Asper 1880-ca. 1941. Bergen op Zoom was besieged by the Spanish Marquis Ambrosio Spinola from 18 July until 30 October 1622 which ended because of the arrival of the Dutch army under command of Prince Maurits of Orange. The events have here been described by three eyewitnesses namely the minsters of the town: Lambertus de Rycke 1575-1658 Nathan Vayus 1581-1615 and Job du Rieu 1578-1627. The present work is quite rare as the STCN mentions only three copies in institutions and we have not been able to find any other copies in sales records of the past hundred years. The work was first printed in 1623 in Dutch with the same imprint but the present French edition appeared in the same year. After the title with the "Octroy" on its verso dated Middelburg 14 September 1623 follow the dedication to the States General and Prince Maurits and 10 laudatory poems. The text itself is followed by lists of names of the protagonists during the siege including the magistrate of Bergen op Zoom and the commanding officers of both armies. The last page contains the errata. In 1867 Charles L.A. Campan edited a new edition of the French text with an extensive introduction and notes.With the name of the Swiss bookbinder Hans Asper 1880-ca.1941 printed on the verso of the front fly leaf. The binding is slightly stained the joints are very slightly weakened. The work is somewhat browned throughout. The work describes the fish molluscs crustaceans corals and seaweeds that can be found in the Dutch North Sea in particular in the province of Zeeland. The plates were drawn from life and the explanations of the plates often mention where the depicted specimen was found. The present edition is quite rare as we have only been able to find one other copy in sales records and nine in libraries.The present edition is a reissue of Natuurkundige uitspanningen behelzende eenige waarneemingen over sommige zee-planten en zee-insecten which was published in six instalments from 1762-1765. A Latin edition titled Opuscula subseciva was published simultaneously. All three editions contain the same plates but the dedications and the divisional title pages of the different instalments where omitted in the present edition which is why there are gaps in the pagination. It is however complete. This edition is the most scarce of the three.Job Baster 1711-1775 was a Dutch physician botanist and naturalist born in Zierikzee. He corresponded with Linnaeus and became a fellow of the Royal Society in London. He was the first to import goldfishes from China and acclimatised them successfully to his garden pond. He was interested in a wide variety of subjects and also wrote works on the earth's atmosphere the weather and birds but the present work is his most well-known. It was intended to be longer but Baster was forced to stop when he suddenly became blind in one eye in 1764. The magazine of the Dutch malacological society is named after him because of his contributions to the field of zoology.The spine is browned the marbled paper on the front board is discoloured. The work is uncut and somewhat browned throughout the top outer corner and the lower half of the fore edge margin of the title page have been reinforced a water stain in the lower outer corner of the final leaf and the four plates at the end. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome himself clearly a highly intelligent man. From this fruitful partnership emerged grammars and dictionaries of the classical Ethiopian language as well as a lengthy history of the country. The large folding map by Tellez is a landmark of cartography as it is the first to show the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana. The fine plates depict illustrations of Ethiopean fauna a banana plant decapitation of missionnaries etc. A monumental work on Ethiopia dealing with its history inhabitants natural history language and literature. Single column 28 lines in a late Caroline hand. <br/> ◆Leaf trimmed irregularly along one side about 18 lines lacking a letter or two vellum a bit wrinkled and worn text a little faded in places but still very presentable and the text almost entirely legible.<br/> <br/> Penned in a pleasing and very legible late Caroline hand this leaf has sustained very little loss and is remarkably well preserved for having been previously reused as binding scrap. Although the text includes several abbreviations that are commonly found in proto-gothic scripts the hand also shares a number of similarities with the Caroline minuscule that dominated Western Europe scribal hands in earlier periods including a long "s" with the shaft on the line and the use of the ampersand as a general abbreviation for the letters "et" occurring anywhere in a word. The text here comes from Pope Gregory the Great's "Moralia" conceived as a commentary on the book of Job and begun when Gregory was just a young papal envoy to Constantinople. It is a guide to the Christian life written in simple direct language which transforms the thought of Augustine into a practical manual of behavior. unknown
