During the First World War he was based at the Censor's Office in Liverpool. After the war he returned to Sussex and in 1922 moved to 8 Spring Terrace Richmond. Hamsey Church was noted in the Domesday book and has been in continual use as a place of worship. It however fell into increasing neglect until in the 1920s just following the date of this photograph considerable sums of money were raised to repair it.
