"FROM THE AUTHOR" Smith also wrote A Treatise on the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood. Philadelphia 1869. Cyanosis or "blue disease" is described here in full via the author's 2-part lecture at the New York Academy of Medicine February 18 and March 4 1863. Smith considered the talk statistical as its results are based on the analyses of 191 cases. Within his paper is a detailed history of the literature on the same topic. "It is only just to state that Dr. J. Lewis Smith of New York in his admirable work on Diseases of Infancy and Childhood gives the best consideration of this subject that I have met with among out systematic treatises." -- Frank Woodbury "The Significance of Bloody Discharges from the Bowels in Young Children" JAMA vol. III no. 7 August 1884 p. 180. Smith was born in Spafford NY. His studies took him to the Buffalo Medical School where he interned. Smith graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York 1853. He worked as physician to the Charity Hospital and the NY foundling asylum etc. Ashwal mentions Smith as one of the persons advancing the field of pediatrics which he tells started in the early nineteenth century but also developed more strongly by the middle of the century. Smith was also the second president of the American Pediatric Society the first such organization in the Unites States. -- Ashwal p 120. p. 171.
