Vol. I. pp. Vol. II. pp. With 3 maps one of which is colored. First printed in 1792. According to Cox this Dublin 1793 printing was probably a pirate edition. The official second edition appeared a year later. Re-bound in modern half calf with gilt spine labels and marbled boards. An ink shelf number is handwritten on the verso of both titles with miniscule bleed through on the title of volume II. A shelf number is also written on the bottom margin of p. 101 in both volumes and on the final blanks in volume II. The map in volume II is re-hinged and contains a tear professionally sealed along the inner margin and crossing one printed corner tip. The interior shows some marginal foxing mild staining and age-toning. Pages 431-432 folio 3I4 in volume II contain a manufacturing tear through a large part of the leaf. The tear is carefully sealed; however due to paper slippage during printing some words of text near the tear are skewed out of place. Arthur Young 1741-1820 was one of the foremost British agriculturalists in his day. According to Edward Coxs bibliography Young " is unexcelled in relating personal adventures in observations of the agricultural situation and in descriptions of the many friends he met. He was near enough to the outbreak of the French Revolution to perceive that something unusual was astir and even experienced some personal contacts with the disordered state of affairs." Volume I: pp 10 cc 6 185 1. Volume II: pp 2 187-586 14; Supplement vii 163. Collated and complete with frontispiece two vignette title pages two folding maps and 23 full page plates one folding. In a contemporary binding of red sheepskin with gilt decoration on spines and gilt borders on front and rear boards gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers. Boards scuffed and rubbed chip missing from head of spine a few pages with old repairs to margins scattered foxing especially to the folding maps. Elliott Coues in his 1892 Key to North American Birds wrote: "A great landmark -- one of the most conspicuous of the last century -- was set up with the appearance in 1785 of the second volume of Pennant's 'Arctic Zoology.' The whole work in three quarto volumes with many plates 1784-87 was 'designed as a sketch of the Zoology of North America.' . Pennant treated upwards of 500 nominal species of North American birds. .We are so accustomed to see 'Linn.' Linnaeus and 'Gm.' Gmelin after the names of our longest-known birds that we almost unconsciously acquire the notion that Linnaeus and Gmelin were great discoverers or describers of birds in those days. But the men who made North American ornithology what it was during the last century were Catesby Edwards Forster Pennant Latham and Bartram." Volume 2 includes description and illustration of several extict species including the Passenger Pigeon Eskimo Curlew and Great Auk all of which were still extant at the time these volumes were published. In addition to the pioneering work on birds the work is notable for its descriptions of Steller's sea cow obtained directly from explorers who observed the animals before their extinction as well as for apparently the first published illustration of a North American musk-ox. Welsh naturalist Pennant originally conceived of these volumes as “North American Zoology†but changed the title and focus after the loss of the British colonies. Two volumes 13 engraved plates of which 11 are of plants pp xx 396; 367 35 lacking the half-titles a general age-toning throughout a few very minor marginal tears there is some marginal staining in the second volume which I would not call offensive otherwise this is a very good wide-margined copy uncut and unpressed; bound in a recent full panelled calf blind-stamped raised bands on the spines with a red labels very good. Osbeck 1723 - 1805 was a Swedish explorer naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. In 1750 - 1752 he travelled as chaplain on the ship Prins Carl to Asia where he spent four months studying the flora fauna and people of the Canton region of China. He returned home just in time to contribute more than 600 species of plant to Linnaeus' Species Plantarum published in 1753. Ekeberg 1716 - 1784 was a Swedish physician chemist and explorer. He made several voyages to the East Indies and China as a sea captain. He brought back reports of the tea tree and wrote a number of books. Trained as a pharmacist and chemist Ekeberg started his career as a ship's doctor and became an expert navigator. Between 1742 and 1778 he made ten trips to India and China becoming a captain in 1750 for the Swedish East India Company. He brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Carl Linnaeus with whom he had a close friendship and was honoured by having the genus Ekebergia created. Trimmed close to neatline at bottom with loss of engraver's imprint. The map is 19cm in diameter. A map of the Arctic Circle to just over 60 degrees south. The northern coast of North America and Greenland is very sketchy. Engraved by Samuel Neele. Undated but Longman & Co. published a similar but slightly more detailed map in 1808. "The Copper Indians" are mentioned and at 80 degrees a note stating "Boundary of Ice 1773". Greenland is shown connected to the continent across Baffin's Bay. Possibly the map came from Part 1 of the book "The habitable world described: or the present state of the people in all parts of the globe.With a great variety of maps and copper-plates" by the Rev. Boards and spines are worn with age and rubbed at points with a few scuffs and scores and nicks at spine ends; two noticeable gouges on rear board of v.1 seemingly repaired by affixing the piece of cover back on. Speckled page blocks are slightly tanned and marked. Foxing and age-related marks in both volumes though nothing unexpected or severe; Occasional creasing to corners and very few pages; some faint pencilled crosses in margins of v.1.
