No date but an ad on page 50 refers to a movie set to premiere in 1952 and an article about the government's five-year plan for expenditures on various projects beginning in October 1951 indicates the publication date of this guide is 1951. In the early 1950s Haiti was experiencing a "golden age" of tourism roughly 1946-1956 marked by economic growth the 1949-1950 Bicentennial International Exposition and increased airline travel. Tourism was heavily promoted particularly to US citizens for its unique culture art and history. Tourism during this era often focused on the capital Port-au-Prince and the artistic and cultural scene showcasing a "modern" face to the world to counter negative international perceptions. Those negative perceptions returned in the late 1950s with the brutal dictatorship of the Duvalier family and change in the country's image from a luxury destination to an unsafe one.
