Thus began the shipwreck scandal of the century, although the full stories only came out later, of mutiny, prolonged suffering, internecine slaughter and eventual cannibalism. As the author shows, this was not an isolated incident of human aberration but a vital pattern of human behavious under stress and a lesson for mankind in self-understanding.
