MISSING 13 of the 14 illustrations found on leaf of directions to the binder have been removed. Previous owners signature Edward Hamilton on title page. Front cover detached text block tight. Official account written by Captain Phipps later Lord Mulgrave. The expedition of the Racehorse and Carcass undertaken for the purpose of discovering a route to India through the northern polar regions was blocked by pack ice of Spitsbergen. The valuable appendix gives geographical and meteorological observations zoological and botanical records accounts of the distillation of fresh water from the sea and astronomical observations. The voyage is perhaps best remembered for the presence of young Horatio Nelson as midshipman aboard the Carcass and his encounter with a polar bear' Hill 1351. Phipps's narrative of his voyage was of considerable scientific interest and was the beginning of modern efforts to reach the North Pole. It also made an important addition to the knowledge of the natural productions of Spitsbergen. The first British attempt to reach the North Pole since 1615. Today the expedition is chiefly remembered because among the midshipmen was one Horatio Nelson and during the voyage he had his famous encounter with the bear the skin of which young Horatio wished to carry to his father. Nelson was fortunate that Captain Lutwidge saw the danger he was in and scared the animal off by firing one of his cannon. The midshipman received a severe reprimand and in later years when Nelson had become a celebrated admiral the story was re-told by his early biographers as an example of his courage displayed at such a tender age. Vol. I. pp. Vol. II. pp. With 3 maps one of which is colored. First printed in 1792. According to Cox this Dublin 1793 printing was probably a pirate edition. The official second edition appeared a year later. Re-bound in modern half calf with gilt spine labels and marbled boards. An ink shelf number is handwritten on the verso of both titles with miniscule bleed through on the title of volume II. A shelf number is also written on the bottom margin of p. 101 in both volumes and on the final blanks in volume II. The map in volume II is re-hinged and contains a tear professionally sealed along the inner margin and crossing one printed corner tip. The interior shows some marginal foxing mild staining and age-toning. Pages 431-432 folio 3I4 in volume II contain a manufacturing tear through a large part of the leaf. The tear is carefully sealed; however due to paper slippage during printing some words of text near the tear are skewed out of place. Arthur Young 1741-1820 was one of the foremost British agriculturalists in his day. According to Edward Coxs bibliography Young " is unexcelled in relating personal adventures in observations of the agricultural situation and in descriptions of the many friends he met. He was near enough to the outbreak of the French Revolution to perceive that something unusual was astir and even experienced some personal contacts with the disordered state of affairs." Finely composed and engraved panorama of Tokyo prepared for the monumental work "Galerie Agreable du Monde" by the master Dutch publisher Pieter Van de Aa 1659-1733. The detailed key in Dutch and French notes myriad buildings and temples on the horizon and in the foreground two processions converge: of nobles and their attendants dancers a trio of dogs and a priest or religious attending a suppliant. <br> <br>Pieter van der Aa 1659-1733 was born in Leiden Holland and started his own book publishing business when he was only twenty-three. His prolific output of highly decorated maps and atlases culminated in his magnum opus “Galerie Agreable du Monde” which illustrated the world known to Europeans in the early eighteenth century. Boards with gilt rules small diaper-design borders in blind and with large diaper design in blind to the centers. Spine states in fairly crisp gilt-stamped letters "Auctores Classici Latini Tom. XI Curtius Londini M.DCC.XVI. Maittaire." Generally unbumped spine head and tail and with slightly bumped corners The leather binding is exceptionally clean and free of scratches. The spine is lightly and evenly sunned. The text block is firmly bound in. 7.25 x 4.5 inches. With brown paper pastedowns and FEPs. T.E.G. and with fabulous gauffred edges in a diaper design. Frontispiece copper engraving of an idealized Alexander and his horse. With 2 frontispiece title page in red and black and other preliminary material on unnumbered pages 272 numbered pages index of 8 unnumbered pages and 2. Included are: a statement of royal license from Queen Anne dated 4 April 1713 to Michael Mattaire for the sole printing and publishing of the complete collection of all the Greek and Latin authors in twelves; a four-page Dedicatio dated December 1715; a Brevis Notitia; a Variantes Lectiones ex Veronensi Codice anno 1491. Main text consists of Liber Tertius through Liber Decimus with head- and tail-pieces and with illustrated capitals. Very light intermittent foxing; astonishingly clean overall. Front pastedown with the stunning early 20th century bookplate of Julius Berzunza the noted collector of books on Alexander the Great. Rear pastedown with the handsome heraldic early 19th century bookplate of William Markham Esquire Becca Lodge Yorkshire. Else a very clean copy. A Very Good Plus copy. An altogether charming and handsome volume and a pleasure to hold in hand. "Michael Maittaire 1668-1747 was a French-born classical scholar and bibliographer in England and a tutor to Lord Philip Stanhope." Six volumes octavo pp 2242 4 generally age-toned throughout lacking most of page 1445/6 a cracked hinge with weakness in volume two a few pages lacking small marginal pieces but otherwise surprisingly sound throughout with 126 of 129 engraved plates three plates repaired one with slight loss bound in a very simple and unsophiticated half calf and marbled boards rather dull the spines un-lettered apart from numerals chipped and with slight loss. The binding is a little tight and whereas the text is easily read the titles of some plates are hidden though there is a binding list with titles at the rear of the last volume.
