No dust jacket. Hardcover. Includes 60 illustrations and map. Penned dedication on front endpaper. Boards are faded around edges, with one or two very small surface marks. Spine is very faded, with one or two light stains. Both sides of spine head are torn, and both spine ends are worn and damaged. Leading corners are very bent. Pages are rough-cut. Small tear to upper edge of front endpaper. Pages are lightly foxed throughout. Leading edges of two or three pages near end of book (these pages are unnumbered) are damaged. Back hinge is cracked and binding is a little loose towards end of book. Contents are clear. AF Used

Importante édition critique du De situ orbis de Pomponius Mela, premier géographe de l’antiquité romaine, dont le texte est restitué intégralement et accompagné d’abondants commentaires et digres-sions, par le savant, universitaire, historiographe et philologue hollandais Isaac Vossius (1618-1689). Cette édition érudite, qui contribua à la redécouverte de Pomponius Mela, était considérée par ses contemporains comme l'une des meilleures de son temps. (Schweiger, p.610). Précieux exemplaire du baron de Longepierre (1659-1721), relié à son emblème de la Toison d’Or. Ce volume est cité dans le catalogue de sa bibliothèque compilé par le Baron Portalis ('Catalogue de la bibliothèque de Longepierre', p. 200). Précepteur du comte de Toulouse et du duc de Chartres futur Régent du royaume, Longepierre devint secrétaire des Commandements du duc de Berry. A sa mort, il légua sa bibliothèque à son ami le cardinal Louis Antoine de Noailles (1651-1729), qui la transmit à son neveu le maréchal-duc Adrien-Maurice de Noailles (1678-1766). "Les reliures de sa bibliothèque, remarquables par les insignes de la Toison-d’Or, jouissent du même crédit auprès des amateurs que celles des livres de Groslier, du président de Thou, du comte d’Hoym, etc. Elles sont d’une grande perfection dans leur simplicité, et, cette bibliothèque, d’un choix admirable, ne paraissant pas avoir été jamais fort étendue, elles se présentent très rarement dans les ventes" [sic] (Charles Nodier, 'Catalogue (...) de la bibliothèque de M. One of the illustrations is the first photograph ever taken of the Quetzal. This printing has the advantage of a new frontis of the quetzal that is in color (the first colored photo of a quetzal published) and a bibliography and appendix on the literary history of the quetzal that is not in the first edition.
