A picture of this book is available upon reque A useful and authorative survey with a surprising amount of detail, covering all parts of the world, eg, detailed chapter on exploration of Tibet, several chapters on Arabia, the discovery of Siberia and Japan, Australia, Marco Polo, etc. The new appendix of 52 pages describes exploration in recent times, published just before the death of the author, and includes additional chapters on Bashakard and Makran, Mecca, south-eastern Tibet, Valley of the Assassins, Gobi Desert, Hadhramaut, the Yemen, Central Asia, Southern Lut, New Hebrides, Manchuria, Nile-Congo divide, Antarctic, etc, and includes the latest journey of St. John Philby.

'A rare work covering travels from Damascus to Aleppo, through the Diyarbekir area to Mosul and thence to Van and Tiflis' (Library of Peter Hopkirk, Sotheby's sale). Only three copies are recorded at auction in the last 25 years. The appendix by John Hugh Smith is his diary of a journey from Aleppo by Way of Deir Zor and the Khabur, to Urfa where he re-joined Sykes. Good illustrations showing people, views, country-side, buildings, ruins, etc.
