1890W2236Madras India: F. Dunsterville 1890. Elias Frederick Evans Dunsterville probably 1847-1908 exhibited for the Royal Photographic Society in 1896 and became a fellow in 1898. He worked for the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railways in India from 1878 until 1902. During that time he travelled extensively throughout India taking many superb photographs. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. Dennis who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the United States. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70000 stereoviews from his collection many of which can be viewed on the library's website. Please note that my scanner does not do well with glass stereoviews. The Rainhill Trials of 1829 were a landmark event in railway history but the subsequent reports in Mechanics' Magazine from 1830 and 1831 provided deeper insights into the development of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway including its construction costs and early operations. These reports covered ; Preparatory experiments leading up to the railway's full operation ; Detailed descriptions of the railway infrastructure and engineering challenges ; The opening of the railway including the tragic accident that led to the death of William Huskisson a prominent politician ; The performance of the engines including Stephenson's Northumbrian which played a crucial role in early railway operations ; The locomotive designs by Stephenson Braithwaite and Ericsson showcasing innovations in steam-powered transport ; The commencement of goods transport marking the railway's transition into commercial use : and incidents such as derailments including those involving The Meteor and The William the Fourth highlighting early challenges in railway safety. These reports were invaluable in documenting the early successes and setbacks of railway transport shaping future developments in locomotive engineering and railway management. These seven issues continue the contemporary reporting in this journal of the Rainhill Trials and the development of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. The Rainhill Trials held in October 1829 aimed to test George Stephenson's assertion that locomotives would be the best motive power for the nearly completed Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Five locomotives participated running along a one mile stretch of level track at Rainhill Lancashire. Stephenson's Rocket was the only locomotive to complete the trials and was declared the winner. Consequently the directors of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway decided that locomotives should operate services on their new line awarding George and Robert Stephenson the contract to produce them. The opening ceremony of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway on 15 September 1830 was a significant event attracting notable figures from the government and industry including the Prime Minister the Duke of Wellington. The day began with a procession of eight trains departing from Liverpool for Manchester. The parade was led by Northumbrian driven by George Stephenson and included Phoenix driven by his son Robert; North Star driven by his brother Robert Sr.; and Rocket driven by assistant engineer Joseph Locke. Unfortunately the day was marred by the death of William Huskisson the Member of Parliament for Liverpool who was struck and killed by Rocket at Parkside. Genuine Original and Packed with Innovation! 18770383571877. Original manuscript. Very Good. 4pp octavo written in sepia ink on a single folded leaf; top few lines of first page are cross-hatched as the writer finishes up her message. In the original mailing envelope torn open addressed to Hannah Pancoast Mount Holly Burlington Co. New Jersey with a three-cent stamp postmarked at Philadelphia. Addressed to “My dearest H.†the writer says she received her letter when she was about to leave Paris but is writing her a less “hurried†reply now that she’s aboard ship although “it seems impossible to give thee an idea of the joy of the whole summer.†The rest of the letter is rhapsodic in its report of the beauties of Italy and Switzerland. The writer who notes that only 8 of “our party…went through Italy entirely†mentions seeing Naples Pompeii taking “lovely rides on the Bay of Naples†and “days at Rome sightseeing.†She then spent “day after day at Venice…riding in those gondolas a lazy dreaming life…†and including a trip from there to “the island where Byron spent so much of his time†San Lazarro degli Armeni. “The glory of the beauty of some of the past scenes can never fade from memory†and she singles out the ride from Pisa to Genoa with its tunnels and sights of “fishermen and …children…and little parties in bathing….†as especially charming. She was equally taken with the beauties of “Switzerland with its lakes†where she accomplished “the ascent of the Rigi†mountain near Lake Lucerne and also crossed the unforgettable mountain passes. She concludes “But I must tell thee all about this†in person and goes on to describe shipboard life. “There are ten Rev. gentlemen on board and they have family worship twice a day.†There is also “a great deal of musical talent on board…quite a concert…and last night a comical school. Miss Florence would have nejoyed the fun…fancy readings and recitations then one is asked to promenade and play games.†she also plays two-hour chess games with a “prof. from Georgia†and then with “another gentlemanâ€. She opines “this is a lazy life†and says she’ll be happy to see her “dear ones†next week lists them all and ends with “Han I long to see thee and tell thee of the romances of this whole summer outing…†Unsigned. We find online that Hannah H. Pancoast was born 28 May 1862 the daughter of Joseph Pancoast and Susan Thompson of Salem County New Jersey. the “Steamship Bolivia†was an Anchor Line ship built by Glasgow’s Robert Duncan Co. and launched in 1873. unknown
1893D108611893. Hardcover. Fine. Dated 1893 sketchbook album in oblong 12mo 120 x 170mm manuscript in pencil with drawings and notes; 40 cream sheets lightly aged at edges 2 sheets are blank. The sketches are generally of building façades captured from a distance but also with some extreme close-ups of sculptural details or decoration on the monuments from gothic towers to ornate door hinges. Some sketches are accompanied with notes by the artist and most are captioned with the site or dated with the month and year being 93. The formatting of the date and spelling throughout suggest this album belonged to an American traveler who visited several sites in Western Europe during the spring of 1893. The drawings are accomplished works of art done by a skillful hand perhaps a novice architect others are barely sketched perhaps unfinished but displaying an interesting narrative which weaves moments of voyage through Martigny St. Maurice and Lausanne in Switzerland; Heidelberg Castle Mainz Cathedral Mayence and Cologne Germany; Utrecht and Holland; and cathedrals at Soissons and Reims in France. Original canvas covers with elastic strap somewhat loose back cover splitting otherwise sound and in very good condition. Inside there is a label of the Carlo Cogiola store in Milan. A great little item full of classic yet original views of historical churches and building parts. <br/><br/> hardcover

This souvenir album opens with beautiful sunset shot across the Columbia River followed by a photo of a young woman standing in front of well-appointed home with Hops growing along the porch. These are followed by photos capturing shipping along the Columbia River with the British sailing yacht Samantha out of Liverpool tied up to the Bailey Gatzert sternwheeler; the sternwheeler Kehani which operated from Portland originally launched in 1890 and was rebuilt and renamed Ottawa in 1905; a nice front view of the passenger sternwheeler Regulator built originally in 1891 by Louis Paget for The Dalles Portland & Astoria Naviagation Co. known as the Regulator Line operating steamer service from The Dalles to the Lower Columbia River past Kalama. Other photos depict a stately Victorian hotel on pilings near the shipping channel; a shipwreck of a 3-masted schooner on its’ side buried in the sand; and Cape Horn along the River prior to construction of the rail line. The final photo captures the waterfront of Astoria in 1898 with warehouses and canneries on pilings and houses above on the bluffs. Lovell 1883-1976 moved from Illinois to Washington following the death of his father William Lovell with his mother Susan Lovell and brothers Charles & Harry Lovell who homesteaded near La Conner WA after first settling in Bay View WA in late 1898. The trip must have been prior to July 12 1898 as the Regulator sternwheeler depicted in one of the photos wrecked at the Cascade Locks July 12 1898 was salvaged and rebuilt with a larger and heavier hull launching Feb. 1899. This 19th Century map includes a "State of Society" for each part of the world declared with a symbol to represent "Barbarous Half Civilized Civilized and Enlightened Societies" as well as noting religion and ethnicity. It includes a table of distances between chief towns or capitals and between these towns and Washington DC. Australia "New Holland" is styled principally as pagan barbarous unexplored and African a thin sliver of what is now New South Wales and Victoria is labelled civilized European and Protestant. Hinges sound interiors mildly age toned. Overall a very attractive set. Frederick Marryat was a British naval officer and pioneering nautical fiction writer. He traveled to America in 1836-1837 and this is the first American edition of his account of that visit.
