Haxthausen 1792-1866 was a German agricultural scientist economist lawyer writer and collector of folk songs. This multivolume set describes conditions in Russia noted during his 1843 visit. From the library of Compton House Liverpool with their stamp on the spine a label and stamp on the front endpaper and a few stamps throughout. Unfortunately a previous owner has started to try and erase the stamps and has got to work on the title page the next page and the first page of text with the result that there is considerable loss of surface to the page and in one case an actual hole; fortunately common-sense exhaustion or death interrupted them - it would have been better if they had not started their labours. Despite the faults this is still a good sound copy of a scarce title. Compton House Liverpool was one of the first purpose built department stores in Europe. The original building of 1832 was burnt down and rebuilt in 1867 so this would have been one of the first books acquired. The new store soon closed however and was re-opened as the Compton Hotel. A library copy from the Garrison Library Cairo with their stamp on the title page and on the final leaf one or two inner hinges a little weak the large folding map is age-toned and has been strengthened at some time it has a repaired tear and is a little worn and creased at the folds the title page has a date - 1885 - written in ink and this has been offset on to the frontispiece which is also lightly age-toned. Despite the faults this is a reasonably priced copy of a scarce item. Important first hand accounts of arctic expeditions under Parry 1827 and Belcher 1852-54 as well as the Antarctic expedition of James Clark Ross 1839-43. Rosove mentions that this work was published in an edition of 750 copies. McCormick was eighty-four when he published these memoirs but five years after publication less than 375 copies had sold. The binding was done in batches there are a variety of variants one may reasonably assume that many remaining copies were never bound. Had there been a "remainder" of perfect copies one would expect to see a high proportion of fine copies whereas the reverse is true. Rosove 221.A1. Second impression of the First Edition.
