Early, rare German-language gazetteer of the Ottoman Empire, describing many cities and places throughout the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe, including 17th-century accounts of Aden, Mecca and Medina in Arabia. The bird's eye views and plates include Aden, Alexandria, Algiers, and Rhodes; Constantinople; Buda, Pest, Kanizsa, Eger, Esztergom, and Temesvar, as well as Muhammad's grave in Medina. An often referred to and well-respected account, mainly on Martinique, but also on Trinidad, St. Pierre, St. Kitt's, St. Lucia, Granada, etc. The author is most well-known for his works on Japan. Griffen 4923: "A series of light, amusing and evocative sketches of Martinique at the end of the 19th century." Smith H80: 'This tells of the two years the author lived in the West Indies in the late 1880's, a time which captivated him. . . An appendix includes some Creole melodies, and the illustrations are interesting'.

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author sailed aboard the brig Pilgrim on August 1835 from Boston to the California coast. His observations of the poor treatment of merchant sailors at the hands of unconcerned owners and tyrannical ship masters lead to action by the US congress and the improvement of the lot of American seamen. Sabin I, 18488: 'If not thte most widely read book on California, this ranks exceedingly hing on such a list'. His description of California is our only trusworthy account before the 1849 gold rush, especially for its description of ranching and social life in Mexican times.

Xiamen Island was considered to possess one of the world's great natural harbors in Yundang Bay, and its served as China's main port for exporting tea. It was one of five Chinese Treaty ports agreed on by the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842. Under Deng Xiaoping Xiamen became one of the original four special economic zones opened to foreign investment and trade in the early 1980s. - Slightly foxed and browned. Rare.
