Pinkerton's collection of voyages was published over the course of six years in a total of seventeen volumes. The six volumes devoted to Europe comprise the largest section of the collection. They are "of great value for its texts which are sometimes given entire and sometimes abridged with as much as possible of the traveler's own language" Hill. <br/><br/>Pinkerton was something of a character. Having apprenticed to an Edinburgh solicitor upon the death of his father and receipt of his inheritance he immediately turned his back to a legal career and dedicated himself to literary matters. Through his works as a historian poet and playwrite he made friendships with the likes of Horace Walpole Walter Scott and Edward Gibbon and through his controversial religious views and short temper he eventually lost them. The earliest Mpongwe imprint for use among missionaries in Africa compiled by those working at the Gabun Mission operated by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Spine cocked brief gift inscription on front free endpaper else very good. Good served as a Presbyterian missionary in West Africa from 1882 until his death in 1894. He traveled extensively in the region learning the Bulu language and making a study of native religious beliefs. He also collected entomological specimens on behalf of W.J. In all Vancouver's party sailed about 55000 miles in what Hill 1753 calls "one of the most important voyages ever made in the interests of geographic knowledge." Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears partially mended on the verso with archival tape with some minor loss. Vandeleur a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895 the Niger Expedition in 1897 and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district. Original green cloth with illustration of the authors on the front board. Minor insect damage to front board spine slightly toned some foxing to endpapers else quite sound and clean. The American husband and wife team were wealthy zealous and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. Among other achievements she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906. Robinson Wayward Women amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission first treading them over with her squat hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition 1898-99 during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier Neate W124. Cassell and Company hardcover books
