The first published grammar of a Bantu language in South Africa "Grammar of the Kaffir Language" by William B Boyce, of the Wesleyan Mission, comprises 54 pages and was published by the Wesleyan Mission Press in Grahamstown in 1834. This improved edition was published by William Davis. Both the first and second editions are dedicated to the Rev. William Shaw, the first Weslyen missionary who worked in Kaffraria.
