Includes numerous illustrations, as well as two fold-outs (one frontispiece with a view on mount of olives, one scroll). Cover edges stained. Cover corners and spine edges slightly bumped. Ex-libris stamp (Malta Garrison library) on title page and frontispiece verso. First three pages wrinkled. Frontispiece worn, age-stained and wrinkled, left edge water-stained, upper edge taped, bottom corner slightly tattered and taped. Pages yellowing and wavy, some pages age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book has been carefully repaired by previous owners, and is still in good reading condition. We offer it for a reduced price due to its accumulated age-damage.

Junker received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887. He published 3 books of his exploration, of which this is the final one. Originally published in German. The many excellent illustrations include the people, nature, plants, native artifacts.

Junker explored Africa from 1875 to 1886 including the mapping of the Congo River and exploring the Nile sources. He also established the identity of the Welle and Ubangi. According to Baker (Geographical Discovery and Exploration): ' he added very important details to the region', 'he succeeded in making very complete investigations into the question of the Welle river', 'he was able to correct a number of earlier travellers who had visited this region'. Junker received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887. He published 3 books of his exploration over a period of several years, all of which are included here. Originally published in German. The many excellent illustrations include the people, nature, plants, native artifacts. One of the best illustrated works on the area. The three volumes were done in the same style, size and cover decorations and were continuations of the author's explorations, although they are often only found separately.

Born in Hamburg Germany, Henry Barth was one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa. His scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and collected many. He established friendships with African rulers and scholars during his five years of travel (1850-1855). After the deaths of two European companions, he completed his travels with the aid of Africans. Afterwards, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German.
