Drawn and lithographed from the stone by T. Hooiberg. Conradus Leemans (1809-1893) was the first Egyptologist to publish a systematic catalogue of all the contents of one of the major European Egyptological collections. He began the great official gouvernment publication of the monuments and papyri in the Leiden collection in 1839, which appeared in parts from then until 1882. Willem Pleyte (1836-1903) was conservator of the Egyptian collections at Leiden, later director of the Museum. A gelatin silver photograph of a section of the actual Papyrus is included. It comes from the collection of Egyptologist Prof. Heerma van Voss (1923-2015) with his ink stamp on verso. Beinlich-Seeber 11572.

Hardcover, the text volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spines with raised bands between compartments, direct gilt lettering and volume number, black fleurons in remainders, gilt ornamentation at head and foot, handsome marbled endpapers, joints of one spine neatly mended. In fine condition, bright interiors. The Atlas is slightly larger as issued, keeping ample margins all around, and bound differently in full tree calf, gilt tooled sides and edges, gilt spine, crimson morocco lettering-piece in gilt, marbled endpapers; bit rubbed in places, spine ends chipped, corner-tips bit worn, light foxing and yellowing mostly to blank margins and verso of plates, small old mark to verso of one plate. Norden's "Voyage d'Égypte et de Nubie" was first published posthumously in 1755, by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. Norden, who died in 1742, managed to see part of his work in print when he published in 1741 a pilot edition under the title "Drawings of Some Ruins and Colossal Statues at Thebes in Egypt". Complete set, the text volumes with the small bookplate of Docteur Rickaert inside each cover.

Badawi's (1905-1980) original doctoral dissertation, defended on January 29, 1936. The doctoral advisors were Prof. Grapow and Prof. Weber. Grapow replaced Prof. Sethe who died shortly before. Badawi received his degree in 1937 and a second doctoral in 1938. He later taught for many years in Egypt and from 1940 undertook excavations at Saqqara and Memphis. Beinlich-Seeber 2081.
Crown quarto. Pp. 29. Original printed wrappers; small inscription. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare original of De Buck's oration, addressed at the Leiden University on June 5, 1929 on the occasion of his first lecture there. His doctoral thesis was presented at Leiden seven years earlier, almost to the day. Published privately by the now defunct Leiden printers firm of IJdo. Adriaan de Buck (1892-1959) studied Egyptology under Sethe, Erman and Möller to become later one of the foremost Egyptologists of his time. In 1922 he gained a theological doctorate at the University of Leiden, for which he wrote a thesis on the Primeval Hill as a concept in Egyptian religion, "a work which has exercised a profound influence on all later studies on the Heliopolitan theology". (Dawson & Uphill). In 1925 he was asked by Gardiner and Breasted to edit an extensive and fully comprehensive edition of the Coffin Texts to be published by the Oriental Institute of Chicago. At the time of his death seven great volumes of texts had appeared, and part of his other great work of translating and commenting on them had also been completed, "an achievement rarely equalled by one individual in the field of Egyptology". Rare complete work. The Text volume appeared in 1972 as volume LII of the Bibliothèque d'Études. It provides the text volume of a joint Cairo-Brooklyn undertaking and is scarce since years. The Brooklyn Museum published the Plate volume two years later as volume VII in the Wilbour Monographs. [ADDED:] Copy of the rare extended Corrigenda list to the Text Volume, listing 23 corrections and revisions to the "Commentaire et Notes à la Traduction" section. It was issued separately two years after the publication of the book and is of considerable importance to the correct reading of the text though practically no longer available. [ALSO ADDED:] In 1982, Dieter Kurth published an extended review of Goyon's book with a long list of faults and omissions in the Plates Volume as well as an extended list of comments on entries in the Text Volume. A copy of an offprint of this important review is herewith added.
