Mit Widmung. -- Leopold II. von Toskana und die französische Regierung unterstützten gemeinsam eine Unternehmung, die als die erste wirkliche archäologische Agyptenexpe-dition bezeichnet werden kann. Sie fand zwischen 1828 und 1829 statt und sollte bedeutende wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen über ein Volk erbringen, dessen reiche, jahrtausendealte Geschichte sich noch hinter einem zarten, mystischen Schleier verbarg. -- Der verantwortliche Leiter für die Durchführung der Expedition war auf toskanischer Seite Niccola Ippolito Rosellini, Professor für orientalische Sprachen an der Universität Pisa. Mit dem Franzosen Jean-Fran$ois Champollion, dem als erstem die Entzifferung der Hieroglyphen gelungen war, teilte er die Risiken und Gefahren, aber auch den Erfolg des Unternehmens. Nach der Rückkehr wurden die Ergebnisse der Expedition in Form der mehrbändigen Monumenti dell'Egitto e della Nubia veröffentlicht. Sie umfassen neben neun Textbänden drei großformatige Atlanti mit 380 Tafeln nach Zeichnungen von Rosellini und anderen Künstlern der toskanischen Expeditionsmannschaft. -- Die vorliegende Ausgabe der Tafeln dieser Monumente Ägyptens und Nubiens gibt das Hauptwerk Rosellinis mit dem ganzen Reiz seiner frischen, transparenten Wasserfarbenkolorierung aus dem 19. Jahrhundert wieder und macht es damit erstmals einem breiten Publikum zugänglich. Neben einer großen Auswahl an Schwarzweißabbildungen umfaßt sie sämtliche 131 Farbtafeln des Originals in höchster Wiedergabequalität und zahlreiche bisher unedierte Zeichnungen aus dem Besitz der Universitätsbibliothek Pisa. Die Begleittexte namhafter Ägyptologen und Kenner Rosellinis entwerfen ein Bild der Persönlichkeit des Professors aus Pisa, charakterisieren sein Werk und ordnen es historisch ein. Sie machen deutlich, warum Ippolito Rosellini heute zusammen mit Champollion und Lepsius als einer der drei Begründer der modernen Ägyptologie gilt. -- Das Buch ist in zwei Abschnitte gegliedert: einem einleitenden Teil mit Texten von Edda Bresciani und Sergio Donadoni, illustriert mit durchweg noch unveröffentlichten Schwarzweißabbildungen, folgt ein zweiter Teil, der den Farbtafeln gewidmet ist.
