The Exploitation of Plant Resources in Ancient Africa Edizione Inglese di Marijke Van Der Veen (a cura di) Editore: Springer US EAN: 9781441933164 ISBN: 1441933166 Pagine: 300 Formato: Paperback This volume presents a completely new and very substantial body of information about the origin of agriculture and plant use in Africa. All the evidence is very recent and for the first time all this archaeobotanical evidence is brought together in one volume (at present the information is unpublished or published in many disparate journals, confer ence reports, monographs, site reports, etc. ). Early publications concerned with the origins of African plant domestication relied almost exclusively on inferences made from the modem distribution of the wild progenitors of African cultivars; there existed virtually no archaeobotanical data at that time. Even as recently as the early 1990s direct evidence for the transition to farming and the relative roles of indigenous versus Near Eastern crops was lacking for most of Africa. This volume changes that and presents a wide range of ex citing new evidence, including case studies from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, Egypt, and Sudan, which range in date from 8000 BP to the present day. The volume ad dresses topics such as the role of wild plant resources in hunter-gatherer and farming com munities, the origins of agriculture, the agricultural foundation of complex societies, long-distance trade, the exchange of foods and crops, and the human impact on local vege tation-all key issues of current research in archaeology, anthropology, agronomy, ecol ogy, and economic history.

Quarto in duo-tone blue color photo illus jacket; 274 pages : illustrations, maps ; 26 cm; bibliographical references (pages 271-274) Translation of: Lexicon der ‰gyptischen Baukunst. In English "The ancient Egyptians' massive stone monuments, ranging from Abu Simbel in the south of Cleopatra's palaces in Alexandria, were built over a period of three millennia, and yet a common architectural tradition links them all." "The Encyclopedia of Ancient Egyptian Architecture documents that tradition and provides a single-volume reference on one of the most remarkable architectures of the ancient world. Separate entries are provided for each of the most important sites, covering monuments such as the Step Pyramid of Djoser (the world's first significant stone building), the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bhari, and the great Ptolemaic temples that line the Upper Nile. Every aspect of building design and construction is also considered in separate entries, covering technical aspects such as building materials (from reed and mud brick to sandstone and granite) and construction techniques (including pyramid building and the erection of obelisks)." "With more than 600 entries and 300 illustrations, this encyclopedia provides a comprehensive perspective on ancient Egyptian architecture and is destined to become the standard reference on the subject for many years to come."--Jacket. || Architecture, Ancient -- Egypt -- Encyclopedias. As New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. 272 p., 16 plates. Mint. The present study seeks to explore the Egyptian question, between 1831 and 1841, and to focus upon the struggle between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sultan. To this extent, it approaches the Egyptian question as an internal Ottoman problem, rather than as an international issue. The choice of opening and closing dates seems obvious enough. Despite a steadily deteriorating relationship after he battle of Navarino in October 1827, it was not until 1831 that open hostilities broke out between Muhammad Ali Pasha and the Sublime Porte. Though these hostilities anded in a settlement in 1833, the underlying struggle between Istanbul and Cario went on until 1841, when it was ended by the European Powers interference. The presents study focuses primarily upon Anatolia and Syria. Altough Muhammad Ali Pasha expanded his sphere of influence towards the Persian Gulf and the Arabian peninsula, it was above all Syria and Anatolia which served as the theater for his struggle with the Sublime Power.
