1920179967Boston: Marshall Jones 1920. From the facts to the fantastic First edition Lovecraft's copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "H. P. Lovecraft Gent. His book. 1924". Lovecraft was well-studied in the history and lore of New England and used this knowledge to imbue his writings with an antiquarian flavour. He took care with the details of geography and setting in his tales using reference works such as this to ensure accuracy. In this copy Lovecraft has loosely inserted four newspaper clippings from the Boston Post and the Boston Globe relating to historical buildings in the city. An active preservationist he wrote frequently to local newspapers expressing outrage over threats to historic buildings. He advocated for a city-funded rehabilitation programme for historic structures as well as zoning laws that would protect neighbourhoods and keep new construction compatible with the city's fabric. His personal correspondence "frequently laments the destruction of historic architecture; for example in 1927 he was 'mortified' to discover that the 17th-century neighbourhood of Boston's North End had been largely demolished" Evans p. 111. Lovecraft's first novelette The Shunned House written in October 1924 was inspired by two 18th-century houses one in Providence and another in Elizabeth New Jersey. Boston itself features frequently in his tales notably in Pickman's Model a short story written in September 1926 and published in Weird Tales in October 1927. Octavo. A very scarce and important study one of the true numismatic classics in the area of medals. In the Introduction the author writes that "The object of this work is to describe and give the history of all medals which have been produced at different times to commemorate naval events and the deeds of seamen in war and peace. To this end all public and the principal private collections have been searched and casts obtained of the rarer pieces to complement the medals in my own collection." This first volume is in many respects the most important focusing on the British series of Naval medals. It includes Milford Haven's extensive listing of Admiral Vernon medals and other pieces of American interest. The translator Ada Haven Mateer was an accomplished linguist missionary and theologian. Here she adapts L. M. Cross's well-known prayer devotional to a vocabulary of no more than 1000 characters aiming to aid in Republican-era campaigns to eradicate illiteracy. Mateer 1850-1936 was one of the foreigners trapped in the Legation Quarter during the Boxer Rebellion. Her Siege Days 1903 remains a much-quoted account of the events of summer 1900. Provenance: Shanghai Korean Christians Association with its contemporary stamp on the title page and shelf label on the spine. Octavo. Small closed tears and foxing to margin light tanning very good overall. Very Good. An uncommon Black Panther imprint printed during the 1970 New Haven trials surrounding the death of Alex Rackley. The front shows Eldridge Cleaver’s Black Panther Manifesto surrounded by photographs the other shows Emory Douglas’s classic image of Bobby Seale in an electric chair with the text “IF THE FASCISTS ATTEMPT TO MURDER CHAIRMAN BOBBY IN THE ELECTRIC CHAIR… THERE WON’T BE ANY LIGHT FOR DAYS.†At the bottom is the information for the New Haven Chapter of the Black Panther Party with the Manifesto showing the address for the San Francisco-based legal defense fund. Alder Blumer of Providence R.I. wherein Putnam discusses the charge of "conspiracy between Lord Northcliffe and myself. Such a conspiracy was charged against me by Hearst in his New York Journal; and when I was speaking in Brooklyn six years back on the importance of maintaining friendly relations between the United States and England a party sent as I afterwards learned from the office of the New York Journal managed to break up the meeting and prevent the speaker from being heard. I went to Brooklyn a week later as soon as I could secure the hall and succeeded in delivering my address. Interruptions were attempted but the audience realizing that the Irish policemen would not act took into their own hands the matter of protecting the meeting and they put the intruders out. I had a word with one of the young Irishmen belonging to the party sent by the Journal. I said 'You ought not to interrupt my speeches; I have always been a believer in home rule for Ireland and I spoke in England on behalf of Gladstone's home rule measures in 1884 and again in 1887.' The youngster shook his fist in my face with the words 'To Hell with home rule we want you to spake sic for the Irish Republic.' I said 'That is not my subject and would not be.' He went on 'You are preaching British propaganda. You are not a true American.' I asked 'How long have you been in this country' and this question brought no answer . Following its decline in the early 2000s the club was bought by actor writer musician director producer and choreographer D'Archy Drollinger who reopened the club as an internationally acclaimed drag show nightclub/cabaret in 2015. D'Arcy was appointed as the San Francisco Drag Laureate in 2023 the first Drag Laureate ever in the world.<br /> <br /> We were unable to locate further information on Annie "Fingertips" Buerhaus beyond their mention on other San Francisco area flyers from the early 1990s.<br /> <br /> 8.5 x 11 inches on pink paper. Newspaper still present toning to front end papers and faint print to rfep top left corner from a bookseller's label. A couple of dog-eared pages. Two margin markings with colored pencil- unclear whether these markings were made by Putnam or Colonel Mann. Otherwise text is unmarked. Binding solid firm tight. Colonel W. D. Mann served in the 7th Michigan Cavalry in the Civil War and had been appointed to the Board of Visitors to the West Point Military Acadamy in 1899 by President McKinley. He later became a businessman and newspaper publisher. <br /> <br /> George Haven Putnam was born in London where his father had been living since1841. In 1848 the family returned to the United States settling at Stapleton New York on Staten Island. He studied at American and European Universities and traveled widely in Europe. With the outbreak of the Civil War he left university without graduating to return home to serve in the Union Army. At the war's end Major Putnam joined his father's publishing business "G. Putnam Broadway." On his father's death in 1872 George H. Putnam and his brothers John Bishop and Irving took over the business renaming it G. P. Putnam's Sons. In 1899 he married Emily James Smith. George H. Putnam retired in 1924 formally handing over the presidency of the publishing house to Palmer C. Putnam. He died in 1930 age 85. G. P. Putnam's Sons hardcover

The first UK edition of these selected poems from American writer and war hero Robert Haven Schauffler. In the original quarter cloth binding. Loosely inserted are two typescript poems one of which is inscribed to the same recipient "These are early drafts and are going to be better soon I hope".A selection from Schauffler's three American volumes of verse 'Scum o' the Earth' 'The White Comrade' and 'Magic Fire'. Schauffler joined the Army as a second lieutenant and served as an instructor. He left the U.S. Army in May 1919 after being awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds at the Battle of Montfaucon and wrote poetry in his spare time whilst employed as a lecturer. Prior to the war he was known for publishing several books that celebrated American holidays. In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards and paper title label to the front board. Externally smart with slight yellowing to the spine and bumping to the extremities. Light spotting to the front label. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with offsetting to the endpapers and occasional scattered spots. Author's inscription to front free endpaper. Very Good William Heinemann hardcover

Old horizontal and vertical folds smoothed-out some handling dust-soil and faint foxing; Very Good. A crudely-designed broadside created by Wade Perry and Gerald Allen both students at Yale's School of Architecture during the trial of the New Haven Nine. The broadside clearly aimed to circulate among the throngs of protestors converging upon the Yale campus and surrounding region called for restraint: "Any violence this weekend will have a direct immediate and detrimental effect on the lives of the defendants!" The text asks protestors to consider the possibilities that a the trial will not be cancelled and charges will not be dismissed; b the trial may be moved to a less "volatile" place; c potential jurors may feel antagonized. "In short: If you really want to help Bobby Seale and the New Haven Panthers if you really want to help the people whose lives are at stake right now if you really want to live up to your beliefs without jeopardizing their lives.then you must make sure there is no violence this weekend!!"
