Full chestnut morocco boards and spine ornately stamped in gilt and blind including "Grevedon" in blind and "F.H." in gilt on upper board; oblong 8vo 305x235mm; contains 21 original pencil drawings each about 90x140mm mounted to the recto only one per leaf. 1920179967Boston: Marshall Jones 1920. From the facts to the fantastic First edition Lovecraft's copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "H. P. Lovecraft Gent. His book. 1924". Lovecraft was well-studied in the history and lore of New England and used this knowledge to imbue his writings with an antiquarian flavour. He took care with the details of geography and setting in his tales using reference works such as this to ensure accuracy. In this copy Lovecraft has loosely inserted four newspaper clippings from the Boston Post and the Boston Globe relating to historical buildings in the city. An active preservationist he wrote frequently to local newspapers expressing outrage over threats to historic buildings. He advocated for a city-funded rehabilitation programme for historic structures as well as zoning laws that would protect neighbourhoods and keep new construction compatible with the city's fabric. His personal correspondence "frequently laments the destruction of historic architecture; for example in 1927 he was 'mortified' to discover that the 17th-century neighbourhood of Boston's North End had been largely demolished" Evans p. 111. Lovecraft's first novelette The Shunned House written in October 1924 was inspired by two 18th-century houses one in Providence and another in Elizabeth New Jersey. Boston itself features frequently in his tales notably in Pickman's Model a short story written in September 1926 and published in Weird Tales in October 1927. Octavo. Frontispiece 23 plates 7 folding maps. Original black quarter cloth spine lettered in gilt brown board sides with paper title label on front fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Edges somewhat worn neat repairs to head of front joint and inner hinges browning to endpapers and p. 131 from Lovecraft's clippings. A well-read copy in good condition. Lovecraft's Library 968. 23331London: Oasis. A presentation display comprising a compact disc of Oasis's debut album 'Definitely Maybe' mounted against a gold-effect disc within a glazed frame together with an inset reproduction of the album artwork and an engraved-style plaque referencing sales in the United Kingdom. The CD label signed in black marker by members of the band including Liam Gallagher Noel Gallagher Paul Arthurs "Bonehead" Paul McGuigan "Guigsy" and Tony McCarroll. Framed and glazed; overall dimensions 53 by 43 cm. Released in August 1994 'Definitely Maybe' was Oasis's debut album and became the fastest-selling debut in British chart history at the time heralding the emergence of the Britpop movement and establishing the group as one of the most influential British bands of the late twentieth century. Central to its success were the song-writing of Noel Gallagher and the distinctive vocal delivery of his brother Liam supported by the band's original line-up including guitarist Paul Arthurs bassist Paul McGuigan and drummer Tony McCarroll the latter departing the group in 1995. Signed material incorporating all members of this early formation is comparatively scarce particularly examples including McCarroll whose tenure with the band was brief but coincided with their formative and most culturally impactful period. While the present display is a later presentation rather than an official record industry award it offers an attractive and cohesive visual format combining autograph material with imagery from one of the defining albums of the 1990s. A desirable and evocative piece of Britpop-era memorabilia closely associated with the rise of Oasis and the enduring legacy of 'Definitely Maybe'. Oasis unknown

18461809120058N.P 1846. First Edition. Map. Good. Mexican-American War Era Map Broadside proclaiming Manifest Destiny published at the outset of the Mexican American War. Woodcut map with hand-colored outline. 46 x 56.5 cm. 18 x 22-1/4 inches. Closed tear on left side along fold. Bottom left corner slightly chipped affecting seal of Ohio. Margins trimmed close to state seals. From the map: "The Texians claim as their Boundary the Rio del Norte from its mouth to its source Mexico recognizes their claims only as far as the Nueces." The coloring draws the border to the Rio Grande. Other interesting points: Comanches and Kioways territory; Nauvoo Illinois Mormon refuge; and a Northern "Boundary as Claimed by the United States" and a "Boundary as offered by compromise by the United States" showing claim to Oregon territory. <br> John Haven attribution according to David Rumsey: "Wheat says Haven 1846. This copy was published late in 1846. Streeter 3871 attributes this to Ensign and Thayer due to its similarity to their 1848 Ornamental Map of the U.S. and Mexico Streeter 3872. Wheat says that this map is the source of Haven's broadside map of 1846 Wheat 26 and the Journal of Commerce map of 1848 Wheat 47 which use the top 2/3 and bottom 2/3 respectively of this map and therefore Wheat attributes this to Haven. The 1846 date is the latest date in the statistics on the states that flank the map. Wheat mentions that he found a copy in Farnham's Life and Travels in California and our copy has written on the back in ms "Life and Travels in California" so this may be another place it was used or what it was originally made for. Includes "panoramic view of Oregon and California and state seals. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C." - David Rumsey Historical Map Collection 2575. Wheat Maps of the California Gold Region 38 slightly different issue: "A flamboyant affair. Haven 'Suter's Colony' is given prominence in 'New California' but no hint of the gold discoveries on either the map or the broadside that surrounds it." <br> Refs: Wheat 513; cf Wheat Gold 26; High Ridge 15; Streeter 3871. 176941974Boston: New-England: Richard Draper 1769. 55 1 blank pp with the half title as issued. Stitched scattered light spotting. Very Good.<br /> <br /> This election sermon is an important illustration of the growing colonial resentment of Parliamentary abuses of power. <br /> Haven pastor of the First Church in Dedham subscribes to the 'natural rights' and 'social compact' theory of government. "By forming into civil society men do indeed give up some of their natural rights; but it is in prospect of a rich compensation in the better security of the rest and in the enjoyment of several additional ones that flow from the constitution of government." <br /> Despite the different types of government "the natural rights of the people.are the same under every form of government." He quotes "the great Mr. Locke" on the duty of the people to oppose tyranny and asserts that the colonists are justifiably apprehensive about Parliament's excessive assertions of authority most recently expressed in the Townshend Acts.<br /> FIRST EDITION. Perhaps the same born in Lynn Essex County MA around 1740. <br /> <br /> Haven was a long-serving minister at the First Church in Dedham MA. Known as a capable orator he was frequently offered invitations to sermons and addresses as in this instance a sermon before the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in Boston to date the oldest chartered military organization in North America. Haven preaches on temperance of spirit and self-control in the face of anger an interesting and salient subject for a military organization particularly in light of the ongoing French and Indian War. Haven uses as an exemplar the late George II and his "surprising firmness of mind in his close attention to and vigorous support of the present war; and that at a time when his flow of spirit might be supposed greatly abated by the infirmities of age; yet so susceptible was his heart of the softer passions that he always prefered sic peace to war when it could be obtained up terms honorable to his crown" p. 23. Alder Blumer of Providence R.I. wherein Putnam discusses the charge of "conspiracy between Lord Northcliffe and myself. Such a conspiracy was charged against me by Hearst in his New York Journal; and when I was speaking in Brooklyn six years back on the importance of maintaining friendly relations between the United States and England a party sent as I afterwards learned from the office of the New York Journal managed to break up the meeting and prevent the speaker from being heard. I went to Brooklyn a week later as soon as I could secure the hall and succeeded in delivering my address. Interruptions were attempted but the audience realizing that the Irish policemen would not act took into their own hands the matter of protecting the meeting and they put the intruders out. I had a word with one of the young Irishmen belonging to the party sent by the Journal. I said 'You ought not to interrupt my speeches; I have always been a believer in home rule for Ireland and I spoke in England on behalf of Gladstone's home rule measures in 1884 and again in 1887.' The youngster shook his fist in my face with the words 'To Hell with home rule we want you to spake sic for the Irish Republic.' I said 'That is not my subject and would not be.' He went on 'You are preaching British propaganda. You are not a true American.' I asked 'How long have you been in this country' and this question brought no answer .
