Oblong album 32 x 41 cm. Album with 50 photographic prints of various sizes 13.5 x 9.5 to 29 x 21.5 cm each pasted on thick paperboard. Album with 50 late-nineteenth-century photographic probably albumen prints of scenes in Algeria and Tunisia made by an unknown photographer. Most of the photographs have a caption naming the place photographed but only 5 indicate place of production or publication of the photos. These were all produced in Tunis at least some by the French photographer J. Garrigues printed and published at his studio. Notable photographs in this album are the first showing a veiled woman a barber at work in the streets riders on their horses camels with riders and luggage the Notre Dame d'Afrique in Algiers. Other subjects include city views fairly candid photos of people in the streets landscapes and the exterior and interior of a mosque.The most remarkable print in this album actually does not fit in with the other images of places in North Africa. It is a photograph of pilgrims before the Great Mosque and Kaaba in Mecca modern day Saudi Arabia with a caption in Arabic. This photograph was taken by the first Arab photographer Al-Sayyid Abd al-Gaffar ca. 1887 making it one of the first photographs of Mecca. The present album contains this picture in its original form including the Arabic caption. An edited version of the photograph in which remnants of the Arabic caption are visible can be found in Hurgronje's Bilder aus Mekka.With a small Antwerp booksellers ticket on the front paste-down". The binding shows some signs of wear slight foxing/browning of the outer edges of the paper boards not affecting the photographic prints some prints have slightly faded edges which does not interfere with the actual image. Very rare publication on the capture and looting of Carte a fortified town near Oran Algeria by the Spanish forces in 1579. The Spanish had already taken Oran in 1509 but the Turks settled nearby in the 1550s namely in the strategic military town of Carte and fortified it. The Spanish forces were not happy to have another army this close and successfully attacked the town in 1579 under the command of Ãlvaro de Bazán 1526-1588. The present publication details the battle and military actions of the various Spanish generals especially Salomon Zaporta "de los primeros que entro en el lugar y mato a un Moro cuerpo a cuerpo" and Luis de Cervantes who entered the place secured it and made sure there was no Moor alive. The work also provides details of the local Muslims who primarily consisted of the so-called "Xarifes Morabitos". According to the author they descended directly from Mahoma were braver than usual and had troubled the forces at Oran for a long time.The present publication appears to have been printed simultaneously by Juan Sanchez in Madrid and Juan Gómez de Blas in Sevilla. Both editions appear to be identical however with only a different imprint. We have only been able to find one other copy of each.The work is browned and slightly foxed. The lower margin has been cut somewhat short slightly affecting a few words on the verso of the final leaf manuscript pagination on the recto of both leaves. 189325870Algeria: Gervais-Courtellemont & Cie 1893. A series of evocative photogravures of Alger by Jean Geiser a Swiss who spent much of his life in Algeria. Most images are of street scenes daily life portraits of Algerians or architecture. The photographer clearly had great affection and respect for the people he photographed. Apparently rare; OCLC: 40622621 cites only 1 copy at the NYPL catalogued under "Collection de l'Algérie artistique & pittoresque" by A Fraigneau 1893 1 volume folio Alger J. Gervais-Courtellemont & Cie.<br /> <br /> Most of the 43 photogravures are signed "J. Geiser Photograveur Rue Bab-Azoun. 7 - Alger" in the lower right corner with the title in the lower left some of these with image numbers. 25 images w/ Geiser text & titles; 11 with no titles or Geiser attribution; 6 images with the imprint "L'Algerie Artistique et Pittoresque" in the lower right corner without the Geiser imprint and one original photogravure image signed in pencil "J. Geiser Alger" of a young Algerian man. All printed on heavy paper 9 3/4 x 12 5/8" the 6 "l'Algerie Artistique" on somewhat thinner paper. Geiser was also known for boudoir cards none of which there are in this collection. <br /> <br /> Jean Geiser was born in Switzerland 1848 and moved with his family to Algeria in the 1850s. His father died about 1852 and his mother and her partner continued their work there until returning to Switzerland. Jean founded his own photographic atelier in Alger in the late 1860s at Rue Bab-Azoun 7 and took over the company of Alary & Geiser in 1874. Geiser's studio evolved to one of the most known and successful photo-studios in Algeria with a subsidiary in Blida. Next to his studio photography he covered all aspects of colonial photography on travels throughout the country. His business flourished especially by the success of printed photo postcards which got more and more popular at the end of the 19th century. In France he gained a high reputation as a photographer of orientalist and colonial photography and won several prizes and gold medals at photographic competitions i.e. gold medal at Amsterdam 1892 and at the Exposition Internationale in Nice in 1901.
