Solitamente ogni oggetto scaramantico viene prodotto, nell'ambito di una determinata cultura, più o meno allo stesso modo. Se ci sono delle varianti, queste sono dettate dal gusto del forgiatore. In altre tradizioni anelli, ciondoli, braccialetti possono essere tipici di una certa cultura o del gusto locale, ma non ne sono il simbolo distintivo, non si identificano con il luogo d'origine, come avviene invece per i modelli delle croci tuareg. Oserei scrivere che, in un territorio immensamente vasto e senza precisi confini come quello del Sahara centrale, gruppi di nomadi in perenne movimento abbiano voluto identificarsi mediante un segno esteriore altamente distintivo come la croce, indicante l'appartenenza ad una determinata aggregazione. I tuareg, con le loro misteriose e magiche croci che rendono ancora più originale la loro ricerca nel grande regno di sabbia del Niger; la suggestione e l'importanza delle croci tuareg intrecciate al viaggio che mio padre ha intrapreso, rendono ancora più intrigante il loro significato. Tutte le decorazioni del libro riproducono originali arabeschi tratti da moschee, case tripolitane, vestiti, suppellettili di popolazioni arabe, berbere, tuareg della Tripolitania - Volume rilegato in bella copertina in piena pelle con decorazioni a sbalzo, di spessore 50 mm circa, 524 pagine con 22 fototipie e 25 xilografie in tavole fuori testo di M. Gavasci e E. Del Neri. In fine un piccolo glossario arabo. La legatura è stata restaurata e presenta spellature al dorso, ma nel complesso la copia è ben conservata, un esemplare davvero particolare di un'edizione in ogni caso non comune.
