Cosa ne è oggi dei Tuareg? degli spiriti che abitavano attorno a loro nel deserto? della vita nomade attraverso l'immenso Sahara, come è raccontata già nella letteratura araba? Oggi i Tuareg, per via delle siccità, delle carestie e delle guerre locali, si sono trasferiti dagli attendamenti nel deserto alle periferie delle grandi città, dove provano bene o male a trasformarsi in sedentari. Ma il legame col loro passato riemerge spesso ancora integro, in tanti aspetti della vita quotidiana, ad esempio nel modo di occupare le abitazioni in muratura, come gente che se pur ferma sembra sia ancora nell'agitazione del viaggio; poi nel cibo, nell'abbigliamento, e nel rapporto con gli esseri soprannaturali, gli spiriti del deserto, che li hanno seguiti, e continuano a curarli, ad apparire loro, a tenerli d'occhio. Il libro è frutto di una appassionata, accurata e complessa ricerca svolta dall'autrice che ha vissuto per alcuni anni presso una grande famiglia dei Kel Antsar del Mali. Vi si raccontano i profondi mutamenti in corso, il momento in cui una straordinaria e antica cultura si sta perdendo, ma anche come con la musica i Tuareg riescano a far sopravvivere la loro identità.
