London. Printed for His Majesty's Stationery Office by Darling & Son 1902. iv 134pp. Folio. Later red half-calf tooled in gilt and blind red cloth boards contrasting black morocco lettering-pieces. Two reports concerning the governance and conditions of South African concentration camps established during the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. The British confined Boer families and black Africans to the camps in an effort to force the surrender of the Boer guerillas. Conditions were dire. Sustenance was scarce and medical treatment almost non-existent. Disease ran rampant resulting in the death of over 28000 Boer women and children and 12000 black Africans. The strategy proved ineffectual and attracted heated criticism from the British press. Control of the camps was wrestled from the military and conditions were somewhat improved not insignificantly due to the tireless campaigning of activist Emily Hobhouse 1860-1926 who both brought the matter to the public more generally as well as organising relief efforts to those unfortunate to be incarcerated. . Large quarto 375 × 305 mm vi pages plus 104 Woodburytypes four very large measuring 233 × 326 mm or the reverse the rest approximately 125 × 190 mm mounted within printed borders on 29 card leaves recto and verso. Original full leather blocked in gilt and blind later rebacked retaining most of the original backstrip; all edges gilt; leaves a little cockled and tanned with a few slightly marked and foxed; expert conservation to a split near the head of the spine to the front free endpaper and the three leaves of text comprising the title leaf and two leaves of introductory notes by the photographer; overall a very good copy with the plates in excellent condition. A lavish photographic survey of Cape Colony Natal Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic with a particular focus on the 'scenery gold and diamond mining districts and mines seaports and the native industries and life of South Africa' from the foreword. <p>This copy has the additional interest and value of a large albumen silver photograph 205 × 282 mm mounted on the verso of the front free endpaper acting as a frontispiece. the margin below the plate is captioned '"Tweedie Hall" Natal Taken by the architect while the house was being built in 1892'. Jacqueline Kalley's book 'Farmhouses of Old Natal' records that the house was built by James and Eliza Morton and the name comes from Tweedie Hall in Scotland where they were married. They arrived at Port Natal in 1868 purchased a farm and over time acquired some 12000 acres of land. Morton sold agricultural machinery and built the first silos in Natal. The grand house was designed by the prolific Natal architect William Street-Wilson; it survives to this day and is currently owned by a great-grandson of the Mortons. 1875169981875. Constantia was one of the six wine regions around Capetown South Africa. Penciled caption on verso reads "Wine vaults Constantia Nr. Capetown." Note the man perhaps a traveling companion or guide standing on steps. <br /> <br /> The Constantia estate was established in 1685 by Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel. By 1778 Constantia wines were made famous under Hendrik Cloete becoming the favorite of European rulers such as Frederic the Great and Napoleon who is said to have ordered it even in exile. 27391Very Good. A sepia-toned albumen paper photograph 180 × 240 mm unmounted with a contemporary press stamp printer's annotations and a mounted typed caption slip on the verso. One horizontal crease across the photograph a centimetre or more clear of the back row of figures; in excellent condition with the later inkstamp of the 'Davis Sporting Collection' on the verso. The caption is explicit: 'The South African Cricket Team photographed at Lord's today. They will play their first match this season tomorrow Saturday v. Derbyshire .'. Accordingly this photograph was taken on 3 May 1912. <p>To quote Wisden: 'The South Africans failed so dismally in the Test matches that although they won thirteen of their less important games their tour can only be regarded as a failure'. In the triangular tournament even the non-representative Australian team proved far too strong winning decisively their first two Tests but to put things into perspective after that second victory 'the Australians did not win a match the record for the rest of the tour coming out at four defeats twelve draws and one match abandoned'. The South African squad comprised Mitchell Captain Campbell Carter Cox Faulkner Hartigan Nourse Pegler Schwarz Snooke Stricker Tancred Taylor and Ward. unknown

174721931-2. Two pages extracted from an autograph album c.17.5 x 11cm sl. grubby mainly good condition. One entitled in ink "North of Scotland v. Springboks. Aberdeen: 9th Jan.1932"; the other just headed by date so "10/1/31 32 in fact" There are eight 8 signatures of South African players on the first page described above and twenty-two 22 signatures on the second total 30. One name "S G Osler" is repeated on both pages.
