Sono ormai quasi vent'anni che il Nord Uganda è sconvolto da una feroce guerriglia. Imboscate, saccheggi, rapimenti e orribili menomazioni turbano in continuazione la vita dei villaggi nella savana. In questo drammatico scenario, nel 1984 p. Alfonso Poppi, è nominato parroco di Palabek nel distretto di Kitgum. Lì incontra Santo, uno dei più attivi catechisti della parrocchia.
