Spesso associamo alcuni comportamenti soltanto alla donna e altri soltanto all'uomo: pensiamo alla cura del focolare domestico come prerogativa tipicamente femminile, allo stesso modo della dolcezza o della gelosia, mentre chiamiamo «virili» l'irruenza e l'agonismo, così come la volontà di lavorare, governare e proteggere la proprietà. Ma fino a che punto queste differenze di temperamento fra i due sessi sono innate? E fino a che punto sono invece frutto di un condizionamento culturale dovuto all'educazione? Nei primi anni trenta, spinta da questi interrogativi, Margaret Mead condusse ricerche pionieristiche presso tre diverse popolazioni della Nuova Guinea, ottenendo risultati capaci, oggi come allora, di ribaltare le nostre convinzioni. Gli uomini arapesh, per esempio, si comportano esattamente come le donne, avendo cura dei figli in un modo che definiremmo sen- za esitazioni «materno»; le donne mundugumor, all'opposto, assumono caratteristiche tradizionalmente maschili, come l'aggressività, la violenza e lo spirito di competizione. Le donne ciambuli hanno invece un temperamento effettivamente diverso dagli uomini, come avviene in Occidente, eppure detengono nei loro confronti una posizione di potere, gestendo la proprietà con parsimonia. Studiando a fondo il sistema sociale, i riti e l'educazione di questi popoli, Margaret Mead giunse alla seguente conclusione: le differenze di temperamento non dipendono tanto dall'appartenenza a un determinato sesso, quanto dalle convenzioni sociali che le sostengono sin dall'infanzia. Il resoconto accurato di questa scoperta, nonché dei viaggi che l'hanno resa possibile, è custodito fra i racconti storici e geografici di "Sesso e temperamento", un classico dell'antropologia in cui lo spirito scientifico di Margaret Mead incontra il più limpido gusto narrativo.
