The material captures village life family groups communal activity and built spaces associated with missionary and administrative expansion providing direct visual evidence of how Indigenous people in New Guinea were photographed during a period of accelerating colonial intervention. These images are historically significant for the study of Indigenous life under colonial rule especially where domestic ceremonial and communal scenes appear alongside roads chapels and other introduced structures.<br /> <br /> Twenty-two black-and-white photographs including real photo postcards and original prints depicting Indigenous men women and children in both portrait and wider landscape formats. The archive includes captioned views such as "Native Huts New Guinea" "A Chapel in New Guinea" "One of Many New Guinea Highways" and "A Native Family of New Guinea." Several images focus on Indigenous dwellings family groupings and village settings while others show larger gatherings outdoor performances or dances communal scenes domestic labor and construction activity. A second grouping centers on colonial-built environments including palm-lined roads formal structures mission buildings and organized settlements. Closer portraits emphasize bodily presentation hairstyle adornment posture and dress while broader views show the spatial relationship between Indigenous communities and the altered colonial landscape. Original publicity photograph by James Francis Frank Hurley 1885-1962 the Australian photographer filmmaker and writer known for his Antarctic photographs including the destruction of Ernest Shackleton's ship 'Endurance'. Hurley undertook two long expeditions to the Torres Strait and New Guinea between 1920 and 1923. From this he developed a successful anthropological film 'Pearls and Savages' and the book by the same title. He documented the people their rites houses villages artifacts and mountain scenes. Although reviews in Australia were strong one critic called it "probably the most beautifully photographed pictorial of the kind that has ever been screened" the film release in America resulted in a financial loss for Hurley retitled "The Lost Tribe". <br /> <br /> The b&w 8 x 10" Hurley print is stamped International Newsreel 226 William Street New York City on the verso. Topics cover include Six Centuries of Oppression 1373 and all that Britain's first Neo-Colony Imperial Conflict Salazar and the Alliance The Alliance in Modern Dress Closing the Ranks and Alliance in Oppression. The authors assert that Portugal is and has been since 1928 when Salazar et up his "New State" in imitation of Mussolini a fascist state. It is an unpleasant fact that Britain today gives formal support and aid to one of the most repressive regimes in Europe--a regime under which violence and exploitation of the people of Portugal are matched by violence and exploitation of the people of Angola Mozambique and Guine Portugal's extensive African possessions. British support for Portugal symbolized and celebrated in the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance supports the Portuguese efforts to defeat the liberation movement. The UK Committee for Freedom in Mozambique was formed in 1968 at the request of the Mozambique Liberation Front FRELIMO which had launched an armed national liberation struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in 1964. It expanded a year later to cover Angola and Guine-Bissau where armed struggle was also under way renaming itself as the Committee for Freedom in Mozambique Angola and Guine CFMAG. CFMAG operated as a campaigning pressure group aiming to build broad based political support for FRELIMO the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola MPLA and the African Independence Party of Guine-Bissau and Cape Verde PAIGC. It worked with all political parties the labour and student movements churches NGOs and many others. It had close relations with the Anti-Apartheid Movement and encouraged a regional perspective for the future of Southern Africa. It organised visits by liberation movement representatives and various specific political and material aid campaigns culminating in the End the Alliance Campaign of 1972/3. Following the 25 April coup in Portugal in 1974 and the subsequent negotiations between the new Portuguese government and the liberation movements the right of the colonies to full and immediate independence was acknowledged. CFMAG organised a victory party at St Pancras Town Hall on 25 June 1975 Mozambique's Independence Day and closed down its objectives achieved. He further edited and enhanced the film for re-release in October 1923 with the follow-up film title “With the headhunters in Papua†released in October 1923. The documentary expedition surrounded photographing and recording the work of Anglican missionaries working amongst the peoples of Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait. Hurley and McCulloch dubiously obtained hundreds of objects including sacred items from indigenous peoples at the time and in fact the territorial administrator Sir Hubert Murray intervened by ordering some returned and Hurley was refused reentry to shoot more films.
