Centrale nello studio di Malinowski è il sistema di scambi detto Kula ring che si svolgeva - e si svolge ancora - tra una trentina di isole, stabilendo rapporti di partenariato tra individui appartenenti a società diverse. Oggetto dello scambio sono collane e braccialetti privi di utilità pratica, ma carichi di valore simbolico. Il richiamo agli Argonauti dell'Antichità classica nel titolo si riferisce ai viaggi compiuti su canoe decorate che stabiliscono i contatti tra donatori e donatari. Introduzione di Giancarlo M. G.
