148 pages. Month by month over the years Jocelyn wrote a letter to his parishioners in which he tried to put into words the high drama of the Church's year. He found stories from years ago and parables of our own days to illustrate time-honoured truths. Taking the reader into his confidence, he imparts something of his enjoyment and wonder at making fresh discoveries of God's love in Christ, which he wants to share with us, his dear friends. The Exploitation of Plant Resources in Ancient Africa Edizione Inglese di Marijke Van Der Veen (a cura di) Editore: Springer US EAN: 9781441933164 ISBN: 1441933166 Pagine: 300 Formato: Paperback This volume presents a completely new and very substantial body of information about the origin of agriculture and plant use in Africa. All the evidence is very recent and for the first time all this archaeobotanical evidence is brought together in one volume (at present the information is unpublished or published in many disparate journals, confer ence reports, monographs, site reports, etc. ). Early publications concerned with the origins of African plant domestication relied almost exclusively on inferences made from the modem distribution of the wild progenitors of African cultivars; there existed virtually no archaeobotanical data at that time. Even as recently as the early 1990s direct evidence for the transition to farming and the relative roles of indigenous versus Near Eastern crops was lacking for most of Africa. This volume changes that and presents a wide range of ex citing new evidence, including case studies from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, Egypt, and Sudan, which range in date from 8000 BP to the present day. The volume ad dresses topics such as the role of wild plant resources in hunter-gatherer and farming com munities, the origins of agriculture, the agricultural foundation of complex societies, long-distance trade, the exchange of foods and crops, and the human impact on local vege tation-all key issues of current research in archaeology, anthropology, agronomy, ecol ogy, and economic history.

Gutes Exemplar; der illustr. Einband etwas berieben. - Jens Jahn (Einleitung)

Sehr gutes Exemplar; Einband stw. minimalst berieben. - Englisch. - A listing of popular literature published in Nigeria between the 1940s and 1980, reflecting its transition from a colonial society to an independent state. (Verlagstext) // 'Market literature' in the sense of popular, inexpensive, locally-produced booklets sold in general markets is to be found in various parts of the world. It is, however, the Nigerian form of such literature, also known as 'Onitsha market literature', that has attracted most attention since its discovery in the 1960s by European and North American scholars. For the purposes of this bibliography, Nigerian market literature has been defined as booklets written by Nigerian authors for Nigerian readers (mostly in English but also a few in some vernacular languages), which are printed and distributed by small, local, self-financing entrepreneurs. They are almost invariably stapled in ornamented card covers. The main genres within this literature are fiction, works on current events, plays, manuals of social etiquette, language primers, history, letter-writing, marriage and sexual relations generally, biography, poems, religious tracts, collections of proverbs and works on traditional customs and money-making. The British Library's collection of Nigerian market literature began with some thirty items purchased from a London bookshop in 1971. In 1978 a set of 129 booklets which duplicated items held by the School of Oriental and African Studies was purchased, already bound in seven volumes arranged by subject. ...
