Lagos a region of present-day Nigeria was one of the principal centers of the slave trade. Great Britain took control of Lagos in 1861 and established it as a colony in the following year. In 1866 it became a portion of the West African Settlements subject to the Governor-in-Chief of Sierra Leone. In 1874 it was added to the Gold Coast Colony but became a separate colony in 1886. In 1906 it was amalgamated with the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. This was the second compilation of Lagos ordinances. The other two were published in 1874 and 1902. The Reichsgerichtsbibliothek Imperial Court of Justice Library was at its peak Germany's largest and most important law library with 170000 works in its collection before the outbreak of the First World War.
