Piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata coeva (qualche leggera strofinatura). Eugene Armand Lenfant (nato il 11 aprile, 1865 a Melun , morto nel 1923 ) fu un ufficiale dell'artiglieria coloniale francese, noto per la sua esplorazione del fiume Niger all'inizio del XX secolo. Presso l'Ecole Polytechnique , Eugene Lenfant diventa tenente di artiglieria coloniale nel 1892 . Dopo aver partecipato alle campagne di Annam e il Tonchino (1893-1895), viene nominato capitano nel 1896 ed inviato in Africa occidentale francese. Nel 1901, assistito da due luogotenenti, è incaricato di portare un rifornimento di carburante in Zinder e in due territori del Ciad, sotto il comando del colonnello Peroz. Con 15 chiatte di legno e cinque in acciaio, riesce, nonostante le molte difficoltà, nell'impresa. Il il 21 febbraio giunge a Gaya. Nel 1902 viene incaricato dalla Geographical Society , con il sostegno del Ministero delle Colonie di "cercare una via per il Ciad più facile, veloce ed economica per raggiungere Ubangi e il Congo. L'opera illustra le popolazioni ed i luoghi incontrati dall'autore compreso l'incontro con tribù di cannibali. Esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione.

In 8° grande (24,2x17,5 cm); VII, (1), 264 pp. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pelle rossa con titolo, nome dell’antico proprietario e filetti impressi in oro al dorso (piccolo difetto). Piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata coeva. Prima, non comune edizione, di questa importante opera sul Congo scritta dal celebre giornalista, scrittore ed esploratore comasco, Arnaldo Cipolla e dal tenente di fanteria Vittorio Liprandi. Particolarmente importante è la figura di Arnoldo Cipolla nato a Como nel 1877, figlio di un garibaldino, fu inizialmente avviato alla carriera militare. Nel 1904, a seguito di un accordo tra il Belgio e l'Italia si recò nel Congo come volontario. Da questa esperienza nacque "Dal Congo", la raccolta della corrispondenza tenuta con la famiglia. Successivamente fu assunto dal Corriere della Sera come corrispondente dall'Africa, seguendo le operazioni delle truppe italiane in Somalia e, recatosi successivamente in Etiopia, ne seguì le vicende legate alla successione al trono etiope dopo la morte di Menelik II (raccolte poi nell'opera, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1911 e più volte ristampata, "Nell'impero di Menelik"). Nel 1910 venne assunto da La Stampa, occupandosi in particolare della campagna di Libia. Viaggiò e scrisse moltissimo in particolare nel periodo tra le due guerre mondiali. Quest’opera riccamente illustrata raccoglie la corrispondenza di Cipolla a partire dal 1904 quando si recò in Congo come volontario e racconta il Congo come appariva all’inizio del XX° secolo. L’opera ebbe un grande successo e le poche copie stampate videro una seconda riedizione nel 1909. Prima edizione all’interno in perfette condizioni di conservazione ed in bella legatura coeva.
