Dieci anni dopo, in piena guerra, fonda l'ospedale Panzi per offrire cure alle donne vittime di violenze sessuali. In quella regione, infatti, stupri e mutilazioni sono armi strategiche delle milizie armate: colpiscono le donne per distruggere le famiglie e di conseguenza le strutture sociali ed economiche della regione. Sfidando le minacce di morte, Denis Mukwege decide di portare il fenomeno all'attenzione prima del suo governo - che a lungo si ostina a negare - e poi della comunità internazionale, e nel 2018 per il suo straordinario impegno a difesa dei più deboli e dei diritti delle donne riceve il premio Nobel per la pace.
