192837587Bolenge Congo Belge: Disciples of Christ Congo Mission 1928. 12mo. 118 pp. The seventh edition of the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission's Lonkundo Hymn Book. The Disciples of Christ Congo Mission DCCM arrived in the Congo in 1889 with the intention of developing an indigenous church that would provide change to the whole Congo social order. After developing a written form of the local language Lonkundo the DCCM began publishing hymnbooks and educational pamphlets although Eva Nichols Dye an early DCCM missionary would later lament the inaccuracy of their understanding of the language. Â Â Â Â From the preface: "This seventh edition of the Lonkundo Hymn Book is a reprint of the sixth edition with a certain number of newly translated songs which was the result of the joint labor of the missionaries and the native Christians." Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership signature of Mary Hopkins Smith on front pastedown dated Bolenge 20 April 1928; her inked initials on front cover. Mary and her husband Herbert travelled to Africa as missionaries in 1909. "For some years they pioneered at Lotumbe but the crown of their service came in 1928 when they established at Bolenge a school for future leaders of Africa and began their teaching service which was to continue throughout the rest of their years in Congo. That school was the Congo Christian Institute" Smith. Later in the library of the Pitts Theological Library Emory University with its withdrawn stamps ONLY on rear pastedown. Â Â Â Â This is not a mission press publication: Actual printing was done in Mexico MO by the press department of the DCCM.
