ill., br. "La storia della prima traversata del Sahara da Touggourt a Timbuctù - la Crociera delle Sabbie - con autocingolati Citroen dal 17 dicembre 1922 al 7 gennaio 1923. Inizia così la serie delle Crociere Citroen, seguiranno la Crociera Nera dall'Algeria al Mozambico, e la Crociera Gialla da Beirut fino a Pechino. «Nel gennaio del 1921, con la collaborazione dell'ingegnere Adolphe Kégresse, le mie fabbriche avevano cominciato a costruire delle automobili dotate di un apparato che doveva permettere loro di circolare fuori strada, su terreni di vario tipo. Il sistema adottato era costituito, in sostanza, da una banda di gomma continua, una specie di rotaia mobile, flessibile e resistente, che si svolgeva sotto l'automobile. Così abbiamo realizzato dei veicoli in grado di muoversi su terreni instabili senza sprofondare, su suoli accidentati senza danneggiarsi, capaci di affrontare rilievi di qualsiasi tipo, procedendo su strada a una velocità fra i 40 e i 45 chilometri all'ora. Il cingolo poteva essere considerato l'unico mezzo pratico, economico e sicuro per i trasporti nel Sahara. Fu a quel punto che alcuni coloni, militari ed esploratori ci posero il problema della traversata del Sahara. L'interesse nei confronti di questa esperienza mi parve così forte, che ritenni fosse un dovere tentarla. La spedizione da Touggourt a Timbuctù era decisa: non restava che organizzarla."
