Salt accompanied George Annesley on a tour of Egypt Ethiopia and India in 1802-06; following that he toured Ethiopia in 1809-1810 "as a quasi-official envoy under Canning's sponsorship marching from the Red Sea coast with an escort of 160 bearers to explore trade and diplomatic links with the Ethiopian emperor Wolde Selassie. Britain fearing a French alliance with Egypt wished to secure a port on the Red Sea. Salt carried out a little archaeology discovering at Aksum three large limestone tablets engraved with ancient Ethiopian inscriptions. Menu for a diplomatic dinner given by Karl Arnold the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia for the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie. The dinner was given at the Pleasure Palace of Benrath in Dusseldorf. It has been proposed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Dishes served at the dinner included: Austern-Cocktail Doppelte Kraftbruhe Ostender Steinbuttschnitte Kalbsmedallon Fr. Ananas - Eiscreme Kaseleckereien. The wines were almost exclusively wines of the Rhine: 1951 Bernkasteler Badstube 1952 Trittenheimer Olk 1949 Niersteiner Hipping Feinste Goldbeeren-Auslese Edelgewachs and a 1951 Niersteiner Vockenberg Spatlese. Until the mid-twentieth century the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was a Copt appointed by the Coptic Patriarchate in Egypt. In 1929 four native Ethiopian bishops were ordained to assist the Coptic Metropolitan. Subsequently with the support of Emperor Haile Selassie reigned 1930-1974 an agreement was reached with the Copts in 1948 providing for the election of an ethnic Ethiopian Metropolitan to succeed the Metropolitan Kyrillos. Thus when he died in 1951 an assembly of clergy and laity elected an Ethiopian Basilios as Metropolitan and the autonomy of the Ethiopian Church was established; eight years later he was confirmed by the Coptic Patriarchate as the first Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. unknown

Complete set of the nine fascicoli 10x7.5 inches each sewn each with original covers fastened together flimsily into two volumes of hand-titled brown paper wrappers. The wraps are laid-lined stock far better than kraft but entirely inadequate to enclose this massive quantity of clay-coated text paper; one of the volumes has fallen apart and allowed loose terminal and preliminary leaves and edgewear. 720p. plus numerous unpaginated plates most tinted and maps most in colors totalling at least 800p. Find many photos taken from the air of terrain and towns; all photography is well-reproduced most maps rather beautiful. Complete no mangled leaves but handleable with some difficulty. Find close-ups of Italian servicemen Ethiopian POWs the latest military vehicles camels plat maps of military routes and engagements. No gore. A. Mondadori unknown

An extraordinary portfolio of early 20th-century photographs of Ethiopia featuring eight large-format scenes from a Coptic Orthodox wedding in addition to eight 3x5 photos of Ethiopian children. The wedding photos depict a very formal liturgical ceremony with the bride and groom in ornate robes and crowns attended by priests acolytes deacons cantors and other ecclesiastics in fine vestments carrying the sacred liturgical items including many golden crosses and a richly ornamented Holy Gospel. One photo of the long procession shows a great crowd of attendees dressed in white robes. A previous dealer's description of this porfolio speculates that the great pomp of this ceremony might indicate that it was a royal wedding perhaps even the marriage of Esther Akhnoukh and Fahmy Bey Wissa described by the English Ethnographer S. H. Leeder. But in Leeder's own account he notes that the crowns and regalia are the property of the church a communal holding and the wearing of which is the right and privilege of all baptised faithful for one day in their lives. Photos mounted on original 11x14' mattes with just a bit of rubbing and toning to the extremities one photo with a tiny dampstain to the margin otherwise all photos are FINE entirely clean and sharp. The 3x5' photos of children are mounted four to a matte. These photos show children in joyful poses particularly showcasing their hairstyles one of which includes a oder girl with a large water gourd; two of the photos show children being swarmed by flies. The phtographer is unnamed but there are a fairly limited number of possibilities. It was almost certainly purchased by Rosenberg on his Travelling fellowship around 1921 putting the date of the actual photos sometime in the previous decade. Prior to the Italian invasion in the 30's Ethiopia was not an easy place to access and was simply not a destination for European travellers making professional photo-documentations of it far less common than its neighbor Egypt in the same time period. One tempting and plausible source would be one of the photographers of the Enno Littman-led 'Deutsche Aksum Expedition' which included extensive ethnographic investigations in the course of their larger mission of investigating the archaeological sites of the Kingdom of Aksum in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. A noted Semiticist Littman lived among the Tigre people of Eritrea for a year before directing the Aksum expedition doing research for later linguistic and ethnographic publications including 'Tales Customs Names and Dirges of the Tigre Tribes' which includes ample descriptions of religious ceremony. Housed in a contemporary 11x16' portfolio sold by C. Roberson of London half black cloth over printed paste paper and ties to all three sides with moderate wear to the extremities and French liquor labels to the endpapers. With owner's label to the rear cover ex-libris Louis Conrad Rosenberg a noted architect whose 171 etchings and architectural illustrations and renderings have been archived in the University of Oregon Special Collections Division. After serving in the US Army and American Expeditionary Force during WWI Rosenberg joined the factulty of the University of Oregon. He and his wife Marie Louise Allen of Portland took advantage of a Traveling Fellowship granted by the UO and travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean and the Levant for 2 years beginning in 1920. Subjects include the sale of alcohol and drugs police discipline infectious diseases curfews and even distribution of icecream. <br /><br />The East African Campaign also known as the Abyssinian Campaign was fought in East Africa during the Second World War by the Allied Powers mainly from the British Empire against Italy and its colony of Italian East Africa between June 1940 and November 1941. The British restored Haile Sellasie I who had been ousted by the Italians and under his authority established criminal courts and published these notices.<br /><br />Rare. Total of 13 engraved plates. The first volume describes the journey from the coast to the capital and Parkyns's visit to the northern provinces encounters with others learning local languages and gaining new experiences. The second volume describes Abyssinian manners and customs natural history and Parkyns' route from Adoua to Abou Kharraz on the Blue Nile. Parkyns was particularly interested in learning more about the Abyssinian customs but he also enjoyed exploring more about natural history. He especially liked to observe various birds that he had never seen before in Europe. He believed that by identifying himself with the natives he could attain the best results thus as he left Massawa he decided that he would not try to preserve any European comforts. Throughout his time in Abyssinia Parkyns wore only Abyssinian clothes walked barefoot had an Abyssinian hairstyle and ate whatever was offered to him. In the book he also described his experiences of working as a silversmith for a year in Abyssinia and offered detailed descriptions of amongst other things Abyssinian manners and customs habits personal appearance dress births and marriages deaths and funerals religion superstitions.
