Le premier article intitulé « Des peuples de l'Abyssinie » est une recension du voyage de l'explorateur écossais James Bruce. « Le Chevalier Bruce représente le peuple de ce pays comme enfoncé dans la barbarie des premiers temps. Les hommes y passent la journée à tisser du coton et les femmes y font de la poudre à tirer pour environ six mille mauvais fusils qui composent toute l'artillerie de cet Etat (…) En temps de guerre, ils sont féroces à l'excès : quand ils sont en paix, ils s'abandonnent à la paresse et à la volupté (…) la famille du Roi vit sur une montagne entourée de gardes (…) Le Chevalier Bruce dit qu'il a vu la source du Nil & que ce fleuve célèbre y est si petit qu'il le traversait d'une enjambée ». En page 2 sont recensés quelques faits divers advenus à Paris par le dégagement d'oxyde de carbone.
