Noch gestattet es der natürliche Reichtum, sie alle dank einer intensiven Bodennutzung zu ernähren. Bananen und Bohnen sind die wichtigsten Anbaufrüchte; Hirse, Gerste, Mais, Erbsen, Kaffee und Tee erweitern die Produktpalette. -- Doch die Bevölkerung wächst viel schneller als die Erzeugung von Nahrungsmitteln, und unerschlossenes Land zur Erweiterung der Anbauflächen steht nicht mehr zur Verfügung. -- Noch vor weniger als 100 Jahren gehörte Ruanda zu den weißen Flecken auf der Karte Afrikas. Deutsche Forscher waren die ersten, die das Land erkundeten. Seine abgeschiedene Lage hatte es bis dahin vor dem Eindringen von Fremden geschützt. Heute ist die Verkehrslage ein Hauptproblem des Landes, müssen doch alle Einfuhr- wie Ausfuhrgüter knapp 2000 km weit per Lastwagen von und nach Mombasa in Ost-Kenia, dem wichtigsten Umschlaghafen, über meist schlechte, gelegentlich auch unsichere Straßen transportiert werden. -- Über dieses kleine, überschaubare Land, seine Natur- und Kulturlandschaften, seine Geschichte und seine gegenwärtigen Probleme berichtet dieses landeskundliche Porträt.
