P6897Munich: Free Europe Press 1954-1956. Single leaf measuring 14.5 Ã 57 cm folded four times to create a pamphlet with ten pages of text and images. Very good. Scarce anti-communist flyer in Czech printed in Germany by Free Europe Press and distributed over Czechoslovakia via balloon from 1954 to 1956. With short articles in Czech and Slovak the publication informed Czechoslovak readers about political news unavailable to them. It also explained the "Ten Demands" program compiled by Radio Free Europe workers based on interviews with Czechoslovak refugees. Approximately 56 numbered issues were printed many of them such as the present one illustrated with drawings and small photographs. "In the 1950s at the height of the Cold War numerous psychological warfare leaflets were prepared by the Free Europe Press FEP of the Free Europe Committee. The group worked in cooperation with Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency CIA funding much of the operations. FEP leaflets were a major part of the post-World War II psychological warfare battle between East and West. From unknown European country. 4 girls in matching uniforms stand around a table engage in experiments and write observations in their notebooks. 1 uniformed young man stands nearby while an older student or teacher supervises. This dates from the 1920s after WWI had ended but a period in which militarization in Europe was considered of upmost national importance. The early 20th century was also a period of great development for women's education as more schools and programs opened to girls. Containing approximately 90 black and white photographic images of varying sizes; from 1 1/4" square to 3 ½" x 5 ½" postcard size; most of them average about 2 ½" x 3 ½." Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young boys and men in Austria and Germany with internal dating on some of the photographs of 1929 to 1935 and additional place and dating information on some. There are photos of children mostly young boys at class and later as young men on class trips hiking cycling; with adult chaperones; for the older boys the educational duties appear to be supervised by Christian religious male instructors only. Also containing a few group photographs of men students priests; and some church interior views. Some of the images have the photography studio rubber stamps on the reverse of the state pharmacy in Rottweil. Five of the images are commercial images of architectural landmarks in Vienna. The photographs are corner-mounted not glued into two hardcover albums with black paper pages side-string tied. One album measures 6" x 8 ¼" and the other 7 ½" x 10 ½" approx. size; both albums with art-deco themed cloth covers. Comprehensive history of Algeria from Ancient Carthage to the then present of French control. Binding and text blocks are tight. Some occasional foxing and on some pages it is considerable as inevitable given the paper stock used. The costume color plates though are attractive and mostly clean albeit their paper is toned a bit. With one duplicate copy; laid in is a small flyer depicting the Czechoslovak and US flags with the text "The American people greet the Czechoslovak peoples' opposition in their fight for a free tomorrow." Very good. Scarce anti-communist flyer in Czech one duplicate copy in all likelihood printed in Germany by Free Europe Press and distributed over Czechoslovakia via balloon in 1954. The flier mentions the recent currency reform 1953 which decimated the savings of peasants and workers and led to considerable unrest. It addresses workers and peasants as members of a "people's opposition" and urges them to raise awareness among others about possible forms of resistance and the growth of the opposition movement. It also references the "Ten Demands" list compiled by Radio Free Europe workers based on interviews with Czechoslovak refugees. The "envelope" features a printed stamp with T. G. Masaryk and the "postal stamp" reads "Pravda vÃtÄžÃ" or "The truth wins." Also laid in is a small flyer depicting the Czechoslovak and US flags with the text "The American people greet the Czechoslovak peoples' opposition in their fight for a free tomorrow." The envelopes were sent on April 29 1954 and were also issued in Slovak. Place of publication not indicated; we have seen credible suggestions of both Petrograd and New York. We have seen other copies described as having 48 pages so it is possible this copy is missing a page though we do not see evidence of removal. Boards worn spine re-covered and ties replaced title page unprofessionally re-attached on a stub with cloth tape. Chipping to title page and staining to first illustrated page otherwise internally clean and sound.
